Hi, new to the forum but have looked with interest many times some of the threads, invaluable source of information.

I have just bought a cooker hood, brand new in the box made by Kuppersbusch, it has a moulded on European 2 prong plug.

The hood is replacing my old one which was hooked up to a standard junction box on the wall behind the chimney element of the previous hood.

My question is - should I fit a wall socket to the mains cable which currently has the junction box on the end of it, and then just use a European to UK plug adaptor, and plug the extractor in that way?

Or remove the european plug, and wire it directly into the junction box...taking care to ensure live feeds live and neutral feeds neutral.

Thanks, Rob.

Cut off the moulded plug and wire it directly into the junction box which i suspect is actually a FCU outlet. Once you have cut the plug off, strip the flex back to expose the brown and blue wires and strip them back to the right length - dont allow the brown and blue insulation to go inside the terminal and under the screw, and dont strip back to much to allow the copper conductors to stick out the back of the terminal!

Thanks, that's easier then. I think this runs at 230v so I thought it would be ok, but just wanted to check. It doesn't actually say anything in the manual.

And I should just add that a fully registered sparkie rewired the kitchen about 3 years ago and the mains cable for the extractor is a designated cable for the extractor.

Do it as suggested above, but FYI you have the right to ask the seller to provide you with an adapter - the Plugs & Sockets regulations say so.

Even though you aren't going to use it, you might as well get a freebie - might come in useful one day.

To comply with the regulations the adapter must be permanently affixed to the cable to present a BS1363 plug to the user, before purchase. A removable 'travel adapter' isn't compliant.

Not so sure on that. I thought those rules are for portable equipment and since a cooker hood is bolted to the wall not really portable. I would agree really supplying equipment with a plug for which we are not permitted under UK regulations to provide a socket for is wrong. I also hate the idea of adaptor units specially since many are unfused. I think the proper adaptor should be provided like these

so as far as user is concerned it has a 13A plug fitted.

But freebie adaptors like these

can be very dangerous only the one to left is fused and that one only has a 1A fuse.

Maybe I should change my user name to Ban-all-adaptors !

I did see the black adaptor picture you posted, as I had done a search before.

The plug on the extractor however is the one I have pictured in the album below and would not fit the adaptor you pictured. Perhaps there are other adaptors?

I was actually thinking of an adapter which is permanently attached, not a plug-in travel one.
