I own a house in the same street where my mum lives, and along with other neighbours, that I contacted and found out that Thames water bills differ so vastly!

My house the bill is based on a chargeable value of Pounds 397.00, my mum sis based on pounds 254.00, my one neighbour's is based at chargeable value of pounds 175.00, yet all these houses are identical!

But when you phone Thames water, to complain and to adjust the unjust bills, they cannot do so because they say the chargeable value is based on when years ago some bureaucrats worked out why each house was different from another! yet they are not different, in fact some of the bigger houses with larger extensions pay less than some of the normal houses without extensions and with just a couple living in them whereby other houses have been extended hugely with loft conversions and a large family living in them paying less than a couple.

The solution isn't in having a meter fitted because it would not be fair if a larger family moved in a house where only a couple lived, so the larger family would pay more through large use, whereas, I believe that all the houses in a street should all be rated at the same chargeable value. Further more it would be very unfair if there was an inadvertent leak or a burst pipe, the bill could end up costing then occupiers thousands of pounds, this is the reason I am against water meters.

So I am paying nearly 600 quid for my house with just me and my wife and my mum only has to pay 370 quid a year and my neighbour pays 254 quid for the year, so how the heck did the valuation officers work that one out? perhaps they were drunk at the time!

well have it metered then, it can be turned back to non metered, plus do you really care that much about a large family having to pay their fair share for water?

Hmmmmm , almost impossible to turn it back into unmetered once a meter has been put in.....

Anyway Mike, many years ago, I lived in a block of 6 flats (all one bedroomed) £ on the ground floor and 3 on the first floor. Water rates based on the old rateable value, and footprint of the building, meant both me and the other 5 residents actually paid more for water rates than a family living across the road in a 3 bedroomed house. The part about the footprint of the buliding wasn't split 6 ways, but charged 6 times by Severn Trent water, to each individual tenant. This is supposed to cover rainwater drainage from the roof. When meters came out, everyone went on to them, but the families living in 3 or 4 bed houses didn't. (wonder why)

Water charges should be based on how many people USE water in the house. Simple as that .

And thats where a Water Meter comes into its own !

Do you live in Lytham PP?

Nah Peter actually lives on the beach underneath Central Pier Blackpool. You've probably seen him many times scavenging from the bins on the Golden Mile. ;) ;)
On Saturdays, he can be found begging outside Funny Girls, and later on he can be found in one of the many arcades looking for coins that fell out of the nudgers.

BIB: This sort of event should be covered by the prevailing buildings insurance.

Despite your concerns about water meters it would seem that you would be a whole lot better off if you had one fitted. Have you not asked any neighbours with a meter what they pay? £600 sounds well OTT.

i would check i avoided a water meter for years along the "family "moving in argument
3 years ago i found out all new owners [name swop on house] will automatically get a meter
so the value off having a meter fitted and being able to ignore if its more still applies but irrelivant as new owners will be metered

my bills halved when i went on meter from 280 down to £144

my 21 year old son lives with me he showers most days at least once[non power shower] i bath once a week between washes in the sink
we use around 30 cubic metres a year at around £1.80x30= £54 so double the consumption will only increase the bill by 35%
