Inherited an old CRT Trinitron from my Ma which went bang fizz last week.

What would you replace it with?

A nice sideboard, coz there's buugger all on worth watching. ;)

We've still got an old CRT Trinitron (26"??) that works perfectly and picture is excellent. Three years ago, a neighbour was going to hoy it in the skip, as he'd bought the latest wafer-thin job. Been using it ever since.

Can't believe people just bin perfectly good top of the range TVs these days. Suppose it's the throw-away society.

Presuming you are seeing the least bit serious Secure.........a few questions to consider:

Do you actually watch telly? Shift as it sounds, swmbo demanded a posh flat screen job, which is rarely switched on!
If you watch telly, do you watch sports or movies? Can't imagine worth spending even pennies to see 99% of the carp in colour, let alone high-def 3D......
How much do you want to spend?
How big is your lounge? 40" telly can look stupid in a 15' x 12' lounge, but lost in a 30' x 15' one....
Do you have sky or virgin, or just rely on the aerial?

True that.... swmbo couldn't live without the sky movie channels yet when we actually worked it out, with the amount of movies she watched on them we were cheaper going to asda and buying dvds when the fancy took her.

Got to agree with brigadier here..recently got a Samsung 40inch 3D HD smart tv with blu ray player ...the whole lot....... and we do not bother with 3D as I find the glasses annoying...don't really bother with the blu ray or going on the internet with the tv and HD does not really bother me as my eyesight is not what it used to be.. but my daughter says the picture in HD is really good. Looking back I would have just got the basic tv

Indeed. I took a sledge to mine a few weeks ago.
For me it was the space gained with the new slim jobby and built in digital. Plus its super light weight.

A container load coming from the far east must hold at least twice the number of TV's nowadays. Huge energy saving.

A big thank you to everyone.....except Eddie. ;)

My lounge is 18 x 13.

But the screen is 10ft from the eyes of watchers.

I don't watch a great deal. I sit in front of it, but listen more.

We don't want Sky or Virgin or any packages, we will use Freeview via an aerial.

I have been recommended a Samsung UE32F5500:

There is a larger model, on offer at Co-op:

But the PC is in the same room. If you think the Smart bit is not worth the extra, please advise.

Thanks, guys.

That's what we did, I'm afraid. We bought a new Sony flat screen thing to replace our old CRT which was also working working perfectly (although a little scuffed). I wanted to keep it, but my first wife insisted we get rid of it because it was too big to put anywhere. We'd have given it away to an old people's home or something similar, but it was too heavy for us to lift and the blokes who took it away (foc) assured us that no-one would want a CRT these days.

I did what I was told!

I have been living off recycled TV's for years!

The only TV I ever bought new was my first, a colour portable 14" CRT from Comet in 1985 for £150, along with an Amstrad VCR4600. Eeeh. Them were the days.

I still have two recycled TV's, one Sony 20" CRT brought in from the garage to replaced the fizzbanged one and a Philips 20" CRT offered to me in exchange for a charity donation to Christies.

I am not too bothered about HD because I too have poor eyesight, but my family would appreciate it.

Does anybody have access to Which? for the best buys in TV's?

I just bought one last week from Sainsburys; a 22" for bedroom made by Celcus. The hi def is amazing but I feel a bit dupped.

It doesn't say 'Hi Def Ready' as I think they should if the in-built tuner won't receive hi def. I thought I was doing something wrong at first or missed something because my true hi def recorder, plugged in same tv via HDMI lead, does receive it. (Same digi aerial).

I'm not complaining, (well maybe a bit), because it's very good. But beware you may not get the hi def stations if that's what you want and where they're mostly heading; ie.

No 101 = BBC1HI DEF
No 102 = BBC2 HI DEF
No 103 = ITV1 HI DEF

etc...

Add. I see very many TVs in my job and there's much hype over the 'biggies' when it comes to manufacturer. But often that's just a badge and the internals are much the same.

Peopke rave about Panasonic being the best, with a price to match, but even if I were loaded I wouldn't get that one. The picture's good, but I can't perceive any difference between that and a Sony, Samsung or Technika.

I'm no expert on these things, but I've always found samsung to be good quality, and reliable.

I've had a samsung LCD tv for about 10 years, and it's always worked fine. My parents have two samsung tv's (one in the lounge, and one in the kitchen) and they both have been problem free too.

Get a new sony 4k super fandango box.... oh hang on noone broadcasts in 4k, nor is there any 4k media currently available, perhaps not then. Can't go far wrong with a über sexy Samsung OLED flat screen, screen size to suit. Mind you I agree that doesn't help with the kak that is fed to said item.
