Public sector hard done by ......B☆☆☆☆☆ks !

Soooo -

what paid for his car, then?

If it would be cheaper for the {council ?} whoever, to have their own vehicle, would that be back to crap management?

One of my external auditors used to run the labs for a council in the south of England.

When he took on the role, he had to put a stop to some of the wasteful practices there.
One that I remember was an older guy who had sorted his diary so that one day a week, he was collecting water samples from two sites. In his own car, at 40-odd pence / mile, at either end of the county.
Took him all day, and c. 150 miles, for two little bottles of water.

(This conversation came about, when I asked why he was driving an old Renault diesel, rather than the posher stuff his colleagues were trotting around in.)

I think some may be misunderstanding part of the post let me clarify

The chap that was telling me this was slightly incredulous himself ......He said at the time his car allowance paid his mortgage ......like wow how does that work !!!!

He also said if you could see the amount of money that was wasted you'd go mad !!

The public sector gets 10% more than the private sector very roughly .....Some fiscal study estimated, to say nothing of the pensions fiasco ( two tier look it up ).

The vicious labour party continually harps on about the public sector pay freeze ......idiots

There are of course different types of public-sector workers. In my book, fire- police and armed forces are essential, along with surgeons and health workers etc.
But there is another tier in local government which actually hampers the economy and is negative value for money; yes - I'm talking about all you planning officers. If there is one part of local government which could be singled out as basically anti-development - it's them. It's not just that they don't actually contribute anything worthwhile to the economy - they actually hold the economy back. Sack the lot of them, and the money saved could be spent on new housing.

Goodby planning - hello slums.

It's not just the pay, which are slightly higher in the public sector, it's the perks; the early retirement for older employees; the generally shorter hours; the far better pensions; the ability to take a few days off work if someone cuts their thumb on a paper clip and the job security - no-one gets sacked for incompetence.

Jackanory..........

Another waste of tax payers money is the free school meal fiasco. The schools have to provide a healthy (ish) meal at a very low cost, which results in huge amounts being thrown away & little Stairwell & Bus stop having a "bargain bucket" on the way home.

I would like to look at Hammonds average figures.

Also you can argue the Private sector is underpaying - thats why so many are on tax credits.

Then look at corporate profitability.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nati...etins/profitabilityofukcompanies/jantomar2017

So Private corps are increasing their profits at the expense of wage growth.

Investors are happy, workers not so.

There's a lot of truth in that.
Which "supports" the OP's original point; the Public Sector are no more hard done by, than the Private are.

Train drivers really are very well paid for the task. Secondary school teachers are not.
not sure why train drivers are mentioned after all they are nothing to do with the public sector
they are employed by and paid by the toc[train operating company ]
