Hi All
I've had a quotes to put in a gas pipe from the meter to the chimney and install fire.

The pipe is 4 meters straight line under floorboards ,which are removed
Fire £530 inset.
Two quotes £2000 and £1300 and told 4 hours work, including VAT.
Seems to be a big difference and a bit expensive.

during their estimating visit to your property, what was actually discussed and are you happy at how they want to go about the installation ?

we cant quote online, you have had two companies in who have actually seen what is required, we dont have a clue what is involved

Cannot be that much involved,,running a gas pipe and fitting a fire in 4 hours

well some claim that they can change a boiler in 4 hours where I take 2 days, as I fit and flush correctly, if you are so good that you can price a job without seeing it I am surprised you have time to be on here , you must be rushed off your feet

I am with you on the 2 days, Ian, but the OP is saying, I think, that the installers said t was 4 hours.

TBF, if the chimney opening is fully prepared, and the fire is run off the mill, I could do it well insde 4 hours, given that the boards are already up. Although I would not neccessarily promise that to a client, and, if I was asked how long have I quoted for, I would say that I will do it without diving off to other jobs, the whole day is available, but I do not expect to use it all. Experienced guys will understand why I take that stance.

OP: Even the lower one seems as much as you could possibly charge, but depends on a lot of things - accessibility of site/parking and locality to name only 2.
If you are uncomfortable with the price, get another quote: BUT, make sure the installer is properly experienced in fires, and is certified by gas safe:

Find or check a Gas Safe registered business - Find or check a Gas Safe registered engineer in your area who can fit, fix and service your gas appliances.

Totally agree @FiremanT I just have a gripe about anyone challenging a price that has been given by an attending engineer who has actually seen a job and given a quote, yes the quotes seem high but we havent seen the job , the ones who have quoted have seen the job, 4 hours with floorboards already up for 4m of pipe and fit a fire ????? I smell shoite

This presumption that you just fit a fire and leave is great.
The flue integrity needs to be checked..chimmney may need sweeping. If lined may need a new liner. That may need a scaffold to be done safely and correctly.
However, there are plenty of fire installers you see with just a long ladder trying to thread a 5 mtr liner down.
Christ we havent even taken the fire out the box yet!!
Then we have ventilation..depending on size of fire normally discounted under 6.9kw.
However i have seen some 14KW gas fires of late.
Then we got to pipe up the gas...that could be a pig if its an existing fireplace that has no provision for getting pipe from a-b.
You can no see why so many RGIs drop fires from there elements. In general its become the preserve of the fireplace shops and woodburner installers who tend to charge the earth because they can.

The presumption on which comments are based is that the OP indicated the quoting guys suggested 4 hours.

BTW, 5 metres?

5 metres must be a bungalow firemant ;)
nothing up with working off a ladder threading the usual 9 metre length of copex down it was a standard day to day job .
Why are so many meant to be proffesional tradesmen scared of fires they are a bog standard appliance .
Think the OP needs to give a bit more info of what is to be done

Scaffolding for a standard glue liner job?
In the day there probably would not have been enough scaff to go around.
