Whichever way you cut it, it's simple. Houses should not per se been seen as a cash generator, especially buying them up to trap people in rents that are often higher than a mortgage, which for many reasons some people cannot get. A average house price should reflect what an average person/couple can reasonably afford, they absolutely should not be for some fat t**t to make a buck on the back of someone else's hard work.

My kids can afford to pay £1,000+ p.m. on renting/buying a property. What they can’t easily do is get a mortgage as they need £30-£40K deposit so we're having to help them with that. Luckily we are in a position to do so but there are many more out there that can’t so if it weren’t for private landlords, there are many people out there that wouldn’t be able to have their own place. Anyway, what’s wrong with renting privately - that’s how it is in many countries and that’s how it was years ago.

It's done very differently in other countries, not the mainly unregulated free for all in this country.

Then why won't building societies give mortgages if the payments for them would be lower than people are already paying?
Perhaps they are the cause of your problem.

Give 110% mortgages to anyone. I believe doing so was tried and caused a bit of a fuss in 2008.

Does that apply to the value of your house? Are you now some fat ****?
Would you like the price lowered by law.
Perhaps you should blame the people who are selling their houses for many times what they paid for it.

I don't think you have thought it through very well - if at all.

I don't own a house.

Is that your gripe?

It's certainly a nice pigeon hole to put me in but i could afford to buy a house anywhere in the country apart from London perhaps, I have no immediate need to buy one.

I could also buy plenty of buy to let's and sit my ass all day, but that utterly immoral.

Yet we keep hearing it's the greatest country in the world.

I had an emergency call from a black family today. The father couldn't speak highly enough for this country. The conversation come about talking to his son and Californian Mexican girlfriend and why this country is so much better than the US for various of reasons. And how much the son defended this country.
