New plasterwork. Trying to reinstall fixture but no picture was taken of previous wiring for droplight. Picture of wiring and fixture. Any help very much appreciated.

Is there a switch plate in that room with two switches on it?

It looks like there are two switch wires there.

Are those wires arranged as they were when the old fitting was attached and working?

Yes there is a switch plate in the hall with two switches on it. The other switch is for the outside front door light which was not removed. Not sure if they are arranged as originally found. Plasterer removed fitting. I'm guessing from the older looking cap on the right side that it is original and the plasterer put on the newer plastic one on the left.

Last thing. All of the earths must be connected together and connected to the earth terminal on the light.
At present the earths are in separate terminals.

I don’t like to guess. But try putting the new light on the blue and black wires. Leave the reds as they are.

Are you saying the yellow doesn't go to anywhere?

My gut reaction was that the blue and black were N, and the yellow swL, but without seeing the wiring at the switch it's hard to say.

I had wondered if the three core and earth was a switch wire, also containing a neutral to do something such as an outside light.

Ah yes. I didn’t look properly. The yellow stays in a separate connector block. We don’t know what that’s for!
the two earths (currently in the block with the reds) Need to connect to the earth on the light fitting.

Your suggestion (with the blue and black wires) initially seemed to work - until I realised tonight that the switch was turning on the hall light and the outside light at the same time. I had already connected the ground to the fixture.

Per my earlier post, the switch plate has two switches on it. One controls a hall light and the other controls an outside light. Pulled off the cover plate and the switch box has two red wires each one going to the L1 and L2 on each side and the yellow SL going into COM on one side with a crossover wire to the other COM. The blue and black neutral wires are going to an old style connector block. This is its original wiring as it was never touched.

That wiring doesn't make sense.

Meanwhile, while thinking -

Is there another light in the room with the new light that is operated with it?

and

When you say neutrals in the connector block. Is this two blacks an a blue?

Any suggestions on connecting the yellow to the fixture?

So the switch box seems to indicate the blue and black are neutral and the yellow SL as you thought. Still trying to figure out the wiring for the fixture.
