I would see this young man as being English.... Of course this depends on if he considers himself to be an Englishman.. But there is no doubt he is Chinese or there abouts.

The RWR - BHS on here claim it takes a certain time to become 'English', but won't say how long, at the same time claiming that others can't possibly get this 'Englishness' thing.

I'd be interested to hear something other than 'if you don't get it then I'm not going to tell you' kind of thing.

Some people know bulls hit when they see it, boyo.

Why do a lot of coloured people born in England refer to themselves as Black Britons rather than Black English.
Is it because the term British is perceived as a national identity which is inclusive of those of different racial origins whereas the term "English" relates to an ethnic identity which comprises of a specific set characteristics and values.

Most Chinese take-away food is about as Chinese as Cheltenham.
That is true.
My next door neighbour ran a Bangladeshi restaurant, he told me that the food they serve to the customers is not the same as the food he and his staff ate at home.
Chinese and Indian food served in British restaurants designed to accommodate British tastes.

If a Chinese person were to visit a Chinese takeaway in the UK, they would not have heard of most of the dishes. I suppose it would take a 'true Englishman' to interpret the menu for them.

Can you explain how to become 'English' and how it differs from say what an English 'leftie' is?

It's got to be within the heart. My English born Canadian cousins are Canadian through and through. They love their country.
I see young black kids speak with a Jafaican accent yet I've met Albanians, Hungarians and Polish with near perfect English accents.

You can be what you want to be.

Such as? How long does it take a foreigner to adopt these unique values?
By definition an ethnic identity cannot accommodate foreigners.
Ethnic identities usually include race myths about shared ancestry and values which are unique to the tribe.

But this person disagrees.

It's something that is bred into someone over generations

We probably all agree that if you're born in the UK and you've got a passport then you're a Brit just like any other, irrespective of whether your ancestors came from Norway on longboats or the Carribbean on the Windrush.

obviously not.
