wheel barely spins, Droning noise, hot caliper , what is the problem here ?

Wheel bearings as mentioned earlier. You shouldn't be driving it.

so is it safe to say the brake cali0er and brakes are not the issue here ?

How likely do you think it is that the wheel bearing is the problem ? am I right in thinking that the front wheel should spin freely as the opposite side wheel does ? it only moves a few inches each way on this side

What could happen if I continued to drive if the wheel bearing is faulty, could it lock up the wheel ?

hey Mottie, is it safe to say the problem is not with the caliper/discs and how likely is the wheel bearing the problem ?
I replaced a wheel bearing on my mk2 ford focus which was my previous car, is the process identical ? thanks

In the vast majority of front wheel bearings, a press is needed to extrude the failed bearing and press the new one in......a 20 ton press is about right.
I have had success with a large blacksmiths leg vice and various pieces of tubing but it’s hardly worth the effort so I’d have this job done for you.

Yes, I remember when I did the wheel bearing on my previous car ( 06 ford focus ) I had a mechanic friend press out the bearing and press the new one in, I then reassembled it to the car. How much would a garage possibly charge to do this if I took the hub to them and asked them to press out and press in the new bearing ? thanks

Check first but I think these bearings come complete with the flange so no pressing out required - just a matter of unbolting and removing the drive shaft and bearing/flange carrier.

Edit. Looks like it does come complete with drive flange.

1 - Front wheel barely spins ( other side spins freely )
It should spin freely like the other side.

2 - side to side movement on wheel (quite a lot of play )
That sounds like a trackrod end worn

3 - Caliper get's hot after a drive ( stays cool on the other side )
Sounds like a sticking caliper or pad in the caliper

4- droning noise
Also could possibly be from the sticking front brake or as you have just changed the wheels cheap tyres with low tread can sounbd like a wheel bearing.

I have updated the thread, here is a recap.

1- issue still remains, one wheel spins freely, the other does not and only moves a few inches each way.

2- the side to side wheel movement still remains, I noticed today when I can twist the track rod end side to side, is tihs normal ? Like I can hold the bar of it and it turns

3 - The caliper didn't get hot today when I checked it after a long drive, also I took out the brake pads and mounted the caliper back on without the brake pads so I could try and spin the wheel and it still would not spin it was just the same without the brake pads fitted.
Also the pads were losses in the caliper not a tight fit , I assume when they are sticking on they are in tight as thoguh jammed like when the apds were sticking on at the rear one time

4- I don't think it is a sticking brake ( as per number 3 above ) as the problem still remained without brake pads fitted.
the droning noise was present before changing the wheels though I don't think it was as loud, could be because I put smaller wheels back on

any further advice from you will be much apprecieted !

I haven’t replaced one of these hub / bearing assemblies (yet) but have done many pressed types such as Renault, Citroen, Ford and VAG......at my age I think it’s increasingly unlikely but I’m still prepared to give things a go.
