Today UK Deaths 359 vs EU 27 of 314

In essence, Sweden's strategy is based on the, as yet unproven, hope that some immunity is gained, and that it lasts for some considerable time.

It might be an obscure method of getting people to do the right thing themselves. It's also a spread out country that uses some internal air travel. Probably more than we do.

Odd really as their Gov tends to react / do things quickly.

If Covid is going to be around for 12 months - the lockdown strategy might be best. If its going to be around 2-3 years - it can't work economically.

Get Killing done.

What an astonishing statistic. The UK has reorded more deaths today than the EU 27 combined. Thats a country with a population of 66m vs a bloc with a population of 450m.

Seems they had a worst case forecast but decided to change to a reasonable worst case figure - 800,000 deaths. So that is the sort of end case it might result in.

It would be interesting to look at dates to see when they could have decided to lockdown due to SAGE minute contents.

Ideas that it was around in december are very likely to relate to flu. China had some of that early so may well be the same thing. It spread too slowly compared with what CV19 seems to do and that needs hospitalisation far more often. The UK flu peaks can be seen in the excess death graph. Looks like it was lower than normal last year. It does vary.

The severity compared with flu is probably what caused some China doctors to wonder but just like it would be elsewhere several swallows wouldn't make a summer.

I doubt either gets recorded as tourism, but I stand to be corrected.

Not all air travel is tourism.
For sure, you are both correct.
But we can safely assume that at least some of those countries in the top ten have similar, or more, amounts of business travel, especially, Germany, US, China, France, Turkey.
A research of air travel in US suggested 72% of air travel was for leisure.

Assuming, that a) other countries mentioned have similar or more business travel, and b) that other countries have similar ratio of leisure to business air travel, it is safe to assume that the table produced earlier is sufficient to indicate that UK is 10th, and other countries (most other countries) in higher places in the table, have suffered less (or far less) than UK from Covid 19.

Therefore motorbiking's suggestion (that UK is most popular for international travel as an explanation for the number of Covid 19 infection rates) is implausible.

Heathrow is the sixth busiest airport in the world. Your list shows 4 eu countries above heathrow, however, Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe.

If one person can infect a million others (given the right conditions) then this makes a mockery of the travel habits of any country.

Surely the successes or failures of Covid19 containment are down to individual government response and effort? All I know is we have the best health service and the highest Covid death rate. Grim.(n)

For sure. But they are not all international travelers, and/or they are merely transiting Heathrow.
Also, motorbiking's original comment did not refer simply to air travel, so let's not get too hung up on that.
There are many other countries that one can travel internationally, without flying or sailing.

Is it so important what the 'quality' of the health service is?
I would have thought that preparation, awareness, predetermined plans, and speed of implementation of those plans are far more important than the quality of the health service.

Bojo was doing that until our numbers leapt into the lead and suddenly we are not supposed to compare numbers.

Your support provides succour to this Government to continue down its path of death.

Deaths today are 357 and it's been over 10 days since we last knew how many people are actually being tested. The track and trace service will not be fully operationsal for months.

Yet you support that. Matey you need to look at yourself.
