Can't We Use This Anymore?

My wife and I are people of colour.
We both have black hair ,blue eyes, pink skin ,red lips and white teeth.

When I lived and worked in South Africa in the early eighties, the blacks were black as in a black coffee and the coloureds were black as in a coffee with a splash of milk. Those two shades of black didn’t get on very well.

Excellent comments, big-all. I've quoted your whole comments simply because it deserves to be repeated.
Your approach deserves to be alongside this article, which basically identifies the unintentionally, potentially educable person, as against the intentionally racist person who refuses to moderate their language and intends to offend.
We probably all have that one friend on Facebook - who has exposed themselves recently as being racist.

And how on Earth do you tell the difference?.. You must have had a sheltered life not knowing P,,I was offensive!!!Anybody could use that defence.

It was colloquial term for the 'corner shop', often owned and operated by immigrants, open every day, and all hours, often irrespective of the original nationality of the owners. It was in such common usage that it would be so easy not to realise its racist connotations.
