A new beginning?

FT article came up on my news feed yet, when I attempted to post it on here, it was behind a paywall. And no, I'm not an FT subscriber.

It was about manufacturing leaving China in greater and greater amounts, and that the trade war with the USA and the pandemic was accelerating it.

Back in Sept 2020 FT wrote this:

US companies are ignoring Donald Trump’s threats to “decouple” from China and repatriate manufacturing, according to a survey of more than 200 companies with operations in the country. The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai found that fewer than 4 per cent of respondents were relocating some production capacity back to the US.

The majority — more than 70 per cent — had no plans to relocate any manufacturing out of China despite higher tariffs from Mr Trump’s long-running trade war with the world’s second-largest economy. “Covid-19 hit the Chinese economy hard in early 2020, but the recovery was quick,” Ker Gibbs, chamber president, said on Tuesday. “American companies still see China’s consumer market as a great opportunity.”

Earlier this week, Mr Trump reiterated his enthusiasm for “decoupling” the world’s two largest and closely integrated economies. “If we didn’t do business with [China] we wouldn’t lose billions of dollars,” he said. “We will make America into the manufacturing superpower of the world and will end our reliance on China once and for all.”

Unfortunately for Trump, the report also says that the manufacturing will simply flow to SE Asian countries, India and Brazil...

There's always a supply of cheaper labour somewhere else.

of course, the digital age has enabled capitalism to hunt down the cheapest global labour rates.

its crazy to think we can buy a pair of jeans for £6 in 2020 which cost £15 in the 1980s

I always find it staggering that you can buy a 50" telly for a couple of hundred quid, yet decent fish and chips is approaching a tenner......

I normally buy Wranglers at around 50 quid although M & S ones at 30 quid have improved in recent times so I have a pair of those as well.

Do you really go outside the house wearing £6 jeans?

Most of Europe was opposed to the US trade war, this year I think most countries have woken up to Chinese aggression and support trade moving away form that country.
Agreed South Korea and Vietnam, India etc will do well but some manufacturing returning home to Europe is what's needed to help the economy recover from Covid, and the mass unemployment we're potentially looking at will certain lower wages.

Really? Can you show how our (UK) appetite for cheap goods has slowed? Bezos would argue that you are way off.

Also, how have the UK and Europe woken up to Chinses aggression? What aggression?
