White and proud

That's if you're fortunate to get an interview at all.
Have a read of this Bodd, it's only a short BBC article from a year ago (picked up by various news outlets). This is people judged by having a foreign sounding name.
I have a foreign name, being Johnny foreigner, but to be honest I never felt I had a disadvantage when applying for a job.
And I worked in many industries, not only as a carpenter.

Morning all 'white and proud' here. (bit of self reassurance)
Sorry Bodd, I haven't got the time to write a book.
Let this comment from noseall provide a springboard for just one example.

When I was working for a large national chain, I frequently applied for promotion, some times to newly opened facilities. So many times less qualified and less experienced people were promoted, sometimes from outside the organisation. Eventually, after multiple occasions of such instances, I approached the MD verbally ( I didn't want to make a formal approach) to express my frustration. He assured me that 'my time will come'.
The next job that became available was a 'down-market' job in an inner city. It wasn't 'the job' that I wanted, but I felt I had to apply as I had applied for so many others.
So I was finally promoted to a 'less desirable' position. Was it because so many others hadn't applied? Or because I was considered the best fit for that job? Or because my informal discussion with the MD was acted upon?
Was that discrimination? Or just an unfortunate set of circumstances?

Just to end this tale, I made such a success of that first promotion, subsequent promotions came quickly and easily. I even suspected that I had the specific support of the MD, and the less supportive members of management were hard pressed to 'keep me in my place'.

What's the message here? Am i being a bit slow?

Nosealls comment is just troll speak. And what you've said here are you insinuating you weren't regarded for promotion due to your appearance or other? Lets be clear ive had a few occasions when i was younger that i just didn't fit and would go nowhere for a while, someone pulled me aside and said you come across too confident some people don't like that esp in authority feel threatened . Now it could have been my appearance. Ive always set myself a rule in every job if it's not working after x don't take it personally leave them behind move on.

That's good to hear!
I never had trouble in my youth, but whenever I applied later in life, I never got anywhere despite being highly qualified so I went self-employed (which turned out to be my best move!). I have a foreign first name, but not surname.

Just because your appearance or confidence held you back, it doesn't mean that skin colour/ethnicity doesn't with the less than fair employers.

Im not really understanding your post. But if the above is your experience I do understand and could not argue that its not racism. I hate to think this day and age people with power judge people on colour. I understand judging people on their appearance and how they conduct themselves but not colour.
What part of the post are you not understanding?
You asked me for a personal experience, rather than a litany of examples available on the internet, and I gave you one.

Bodd asked for a personal experience because he was unhappy with the litany of examples I presented him with.

Noseall's comment was accurate and pragmatic, base on real live experiences and experiments.

I had some thoughts after I'd written that post. Thoughts that I hadn't considered at the time of the related experience.

I wasn't the only one so affected!
The other non-white manager was also in an inner-city, less prestigious, less prodigious branch.
Those more prestigious, more prodigious branches were managed by white members of staff.
Coincidence?

Suppose such practices are the normal modus operandi of national chains, non-white managers limited to the less prestigious branches because of the colour of their skin.
If a manager is sufficiently qualified and experienced, should it matter what type of facility he/she manages?
Or is the saying 'horses for courses' sufficient to excuse such discrimination?

Hello Himagin how's it hanging
