DIY gas thread - I'm confused

Same question should apply to @bernardgreen

I doubt anyone has never made a mistake. I have myself made minor mistakes, but where it comes to expensive things, or dangerous - I have always made a point of never assuming and checking my work as I go, then making a final thorough check to ensure everything is exactly as it should be.

Would you install a new gas boiler in your home, illegally, because the likelihood is you won't be prosecuted? It is a simple question.

You don't need to when there are "professional" makers of error and omissions.

how rude! we were just having banter - I think the debate was pretty much over unless we can uncover a HSE professional
Rude! Personally I couldn’t give a toss. your the one being rude with your innuendo that a qualified gas engineer isn’t worth anything as you can quite easily do it yourself. Hey crack on. Think what you want. Like I said check home insurance see how far that gets. Would you argue against a chimney sweep . You do realise they have to be registered and for open flue appliances they need to be inspected etc for house insurance. Or will you just do it yourself, not hard is it

Excuse me, you must have missed the bit where I said that my advice is to hire someone with a proven track record. Don't just take qualifications as proof of competence, instead also look for a portfolio of high quality work.

To be fair I fell asleep through most of the postings. Sorry my bad

I cant be bothered to wade through 8 pages but read the first and last 2. Not a pro HSE but a retired engineer with experience as a Risk Manager. Yeah competence needs to be demonstrated not just through qualifications but appropriate experience and training. Court of law is the only place it could be proved unless the HSE were satisfied prior to any charges being brought. Personally I managed to keep a maintenance manager out of jail by demonstrating appropriate records were kept detailing the work undertaken, who by and that they were trained and competent. HSE were satisfied their were flaws in the materials used that were not visible and only found as a result of being in use and through destructive testing.

Thanks @Old Salt - I wonder if you'd know the answer to this question. Say 'Joe' gets reported to the HSE for doing DIY gas work in his own home - the HSE come out and inspect Joe's work and find his work to be perfectly competent and safe. However Joe doesn't have any certificates or qualifications. Will they take any legal action against Joe?
