New Covid Variant - B.1.1.529

Also - the article begins with:

"Eight notable variants of SARS-CoV-2 have been found since September 2020. Elisabeth Mahase reviews the line-up so far."

Yet Beta was identified in May 2020.

That's correct. It was identified in May 2020 but only became a variant of concern later on when they had enough data.

It gives info on cases where they have been found.

As of today masks are back.

LOL Where you lot get your info from. Even the beeb can do way way better in a few mins.

The first link shows a variant that had a + 8000 odd increase in infections. There is a technical briefing about on it as well easily found with google on a UK gov site. Too short a period of time to be conclusive.

The masks are back because it will take 3 weeks to get an idea of the impact of omicron. Could turn out to be longer. They can't sequence everybody's infection so sample. Seems the UK can do way more of that than others can. The fact that some one has found a new one on it's own doesn't mean much. It's impact on infection rates etc does. There can be a long delay before any change in the misbegotten thing becomes apparent as other variants will still be infecting people. The time scales can be much more like it took a few people to infect all of the UK more rapidly in the obviously more crowed and visited areas.

There are also minor changes in it. They can show which particular country a person caught it in. It's the spike changes that bug them as that is how and why it gets easily into cells and confuses the immune system.

Masks do make a difference to infection rates. As does hand washing and distancing. Masks reduce the need for hand washing and also for distancing. TBH given that they also influence flu my personal view considering the NHS is that they shouldn't have been dropped where they can easily be used, ;) Probably put people off eating and drinking out though even if they were told ok take them off to stuff things down their gullets - so not good for some sectors of the economy.

They can not prevent infections only slow the rates. Some people of course do not help with that aspect at all.

This is like a parent sitting in a chair & listening to their child telling them that Santa is real.

Whether you believe it or not is immaterial. I've read several tests that say wearing mask does help reduce transmission, to an extend dependant on the type and way they're worn.
Do you have any evidence that they don't? If so you should have posted a link; if not, taking the píss just makes you look a tit.

Masks don't "reduce the need for hand washing" - they both would help overall.

Washing hands
Social distancing
mask wearing

It’s not that much of a deal and if we all do it, it makes a difference.

And if none of them actually makes a difference; what then?
The evidence suggests they do make a difference.

So what benefit is there in asking a hypothetical?

The thing about non pharmaceutical interventions is there can be no real, live studies - NPIs are used by govts to limit infection spread, they are overlapped, stopped and started etc etc, it’s very hard to isolate which work and which don’t.

But the available evidence is that they do work…..so why not do them?

Who cares about the new variation of the previous variation, which was a variation of the previous variation.
If you get it, you get it it.
Something always gets you in the end.
So stop worrying.

Will you be able to say the same thing, laid dying in an ICU bed, on oxygen?

Idea is minimise the risk and extend your useful life as long as possible, for the majority of the population.

Or a child sitting in a chair & listening to their parent telling them that god is real...

I dont worry about covid, variants or daily deaths....I make the effort to mitigate the risk where I can and get on with my life

as it happens I dont really go to the pub or eat in restaurants and I work currently at home or in a 2000 sq ft workshop, mostly on my own
