Germany is really going to struggle with sanctions given where 40% of their energy comes from. I don't think Putin is deterred by strong words from Macron.

European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen says the EU will be considering "a package of massive and targeted sanctions" to block Russia's access to technology and financial markets.

I suspect it will be over by the time they agree on them.

Putin is pro-Brexit because he likes to see Europe divided and weakened, and he likes to see UK isolate itself from its nearest neighbours.

He wants to see European nations out of NATO for exactly the same reasons.

Trump also likes to see weakness and division in Europe because he sees it as a competitor, not an ally.

If Ukraine was already a full member of both EU and NATO, Putin would find invasion and occupation more costly. Hence he tried to prevent both, and struck before it was too late.

It wasn't really trump, it was those that couldn't stand him in power, he wasn't one of them a career politician, they threw everything they could at him while he was in office and very little of it stuck, they created the division by the way they were acting.

Sovereign independent Brexit Britain trying to exclude Russia from the 'swift' banking system, would stop money transfers in and out of Russia and make oil/gas exports difficult.
