There are 5.3 million on out-of-work benefits. I've not been on the dole for about 20 years, and back then it was about £50 a week. I don't know what it is now, but let's say a round figure of £75 a week. That's a conservative estimate I'm sure, but at that, it's nearly £400 million a week, or £20 billion a year. Stop the cash payments and give them soup. Then you've got all the payments to foreign countries, and on rubbish like HS2. I'd have the debt down in no time and then we could keep all our own money to do something good with.

Of course not, provided I was genuinely ill.

Remember the Spectator article I posted? It states that there are 1.7 million people on long-term sick - so sick they are incapable of any work. Is that believable?

1.7 million is higher than the population of Estonia.

The total on out-of-work benefits, 5.3 million, is higher than the population of Scotland.

As a rule, yes. They are a Conservative supporting publication, but equally they will crucify the Cons when they see fit, as they have done recently, even going so far as to add support to Boris's demise, I certainly think they show more 'even handedness' than perhaps The Guardian or the BBC.
