Those extension leads, on a drum

I'm not a fan of trip hazards. I advocate sufficient socket-outlets so that extension leads aren't required.
I don't do iny of those but I do do EETing and that constitutes the visual inspection part.

I don't think that the 'wound up' extension reels on drums or in 'cassettes' are often used indoors because of 'insufficient socket outlets'. They are most commonly used outdoors and/or in situations in which there are no (live) sockets at all in the location in question.
They're frequently used indoors.

The impression I get is that LEDs are about 1-2 times as efficient as flourescent tubes
Not sure I've ever thought about LED in terms of flourescent-tubes-worth, more that around 5W LED is what you'd put in your ceiling (GU10) and 20W would be an outdoor security light ..

Given that it is now very common for portable appliances to have cords only 2m (or sometimes less) long, how many sockets is "sufficient"?

My garden is 120' long and 30' wide. Can you please tell me how many sockets you think I should have in it?

Quite often used in domestic environments here.
Are Irish houses so short of sockets?

Thinking of my (large) house in England, I can't really think of any point (other than in bathrooms) that would be more than 2 metres or so from a socket, and the majority of appliances probably have a metre or so of cable - so I can't imagine why I would ever need to use a 6, 12, 25 or 50 metre extension drum or cassette indoors.

The question has to be why would anyone, living in a normal domestic environment, in 2025, even need an industrial extension reel to be used? Thinking back, I can only recall two occasions when in needed to bring such a reel, into my home, to use... The first time was when we had the entire house refurbished, when we lived here through it, which involved a complete rewire. Then last year, when I replaced the consumer unit, cutting all power and adding a temporary supply for lighting and fridges.

It's the only correct answer, as I'm not familiar with your installation or needs.
I have a garden, 120' x 30'.

In it I need to use portable equipment which may have quite short leads.

Which do you consider is the better solution:

a) A socket on the rear wall of the house and an extension reel long enough to reach every point the garden

b) A great many sockets distributed throughout the garden so that portable equipment with short leads can be used in every point without needing an extension reel.

And why?

Are these industrial?

I would suggest no. An industrial grade cable reel, is one on a tubular bracket/stand, allowing the cable to be run out by simply pulling the plug end of the cable, leaving the reel in place. I used to have one of the type in your photo, which I found so awkward to use, and I gave it away.

The better option is to ignore your imbecilic and frequently racist posts.
No - the better option is for you to actually answer, instead of indulging in your usual practice of lies, misinformation, deranged advice and abuse and then melting away until the next time something triggers you and you decide to come in swinging your wrecking ball.

"Racist" for example?

I challenge you to provide one, just one, example of a racist post I have made. Shouldn't be hard, if you think they are "frequent".

The cable shall be fully unwound when in use.

So if I was powering, say, an inspection lamp with a 10W LED bulb in it, why should it need to be fully unwound?

It might be fun to start a book on your answer.

I could probably offer 1000/1 on you giving a proper one, intelligently argued, underpinned by sound engineering concepts.

But how to price options like you just ignoring this, or responding with abuse, or bluster, or some kind of reply which doesn't actually qualify as a proper answer - there's the problem.
