Climate Change

not on planet earth it didn't - planet earth didn't pop into existence for another 10 billion years
It was tongue in cheek, a quip if you will.

However, the building blocks of earth were there.

So, we regularly see maximum temperatures in England and Wales that we wouldn't have dreamed of thirty years ago. Back then it was unusual to see twenty eight degrees. But now thirty three is quite common.

This doesn't mean the average global temperature has gone up by five degrees in the past thirty years. At most it has gone up by one degree.

But it probably has caused these large changes in maximum temperature here in the UK.

The usual explanation is to do with the jet stream.

Normally, the jet stream is to the South of the UK. And this drags down cooler weather from the Arctic. However, when the jet stream is to the North of the UK, the opposite happens, and we drag up hot weather from Africa.

The theory is that the jet stream is getting weaker and less predictable, which causes it to move around more.

This is one of the possible positive feedback loops that are predicted by meteorologists.

The theory is that the power of the jet stream is driven by the cold temperatures in the Arctic. The Arctic is warming faster than anywhere else on earth. This causes the jet stream to lose power. Which in turn drags warm air into the Arctic. Causing a type of vicious circle.

Someone’s been busy on Google.

The Gulf Stream getting weaker has been mentioned for decades.

Yep like others been out on my bike today getting exercise, hardly used any greenhouse gas producing energy - shower on lowest setting, washing dry outside. garden growing my food abundant insects pollinating out getting immune system boosting vit D no need for any nonsense jab boosters, beautiful climate warming.

Yep UK weather just depends on which way the wind blows and not how long I leave my lights on.

I have replied on this thread because I didn't want to disrupt the other one.

I would agree that in the UK it would actually be nice to be two or three degrees warmer. It is the possible effects in the rest of the world which might be the problem. They could be anywhere from negligible to manageable to catastrophic.

Surely we should be investing in de salination plants and solar energy in anticipation of South Shields emerging as the new Benidorm

I am sure I have seen desalination mentioned as a possibility for the UK. It sounded a bit crazy. We could just build some new reservoirs instead. I know some will say just stop the leaks, but fixing millions of small leaks would be incredibly disruptive and expensive.

It is more nuanced than that, not least because the leaking water is stuff we've already paid to make potable.

Furthermore, if we
just build some new reservoirs instead

where do you think that water will go?

That's right: pizzed away because of the leaks some thought too disruptive and expensive to fix.
