I would say so, I wouldn't be interested in mental health issues or depression. People have that but don't go to the extremes of killing their family, children of all things.

Correct. Plenty of scenarios where theft of a vehicle can be an aggravated offence. Not just sec 12A of the theft act. But perhaps targeting the person’s car due to the owner’s race or religion.

Another perspective in all this is that of the victims family.

There was a tv prog of families in the States that had family members who were murdered, with the perpetrator on death row and their time of execution nearing.

It was a very interesting and quite emotional watch. I think one of the families was keen to see the perpetrator executed, the other wasn't (possibly for religious reasons).

After both perpetrators were executed, the family that had wanted it to go ahead hadn't found any more peace, which they thought it (the execution) would bring.

Of course, that's not to say there wouldn't be families (perhaps the majority) that would want execution, however it was an interesting watch nevertheless.

I watched one where the family watched him in the electric chair, they were screaming at the sight of the execution as it took two shocks to administer and pronounce him dead. Must admit it didn't seem to give them any peace, but then if you had a child murdered could you realistically ever find any peace

It only becomes an aggravated offence if / when other factors and offences come into play, e.g dangerous driving, damage, etc.
So car theft is not an aggravated offence, per se, until it becomes an aggravated offence, i.e. other factors or offences, then it' becomes a more serious offence.
