Holy Smoke

Re. this utopia where cannabis is legal; supply and purity are controlled, crime is reduced and taxes are raised.

It's bollucks.

Look at what happens with tobacco presently...anybody who lives in one of the occupied towns of the north will be familiar with under-the-counter sales of illegal tobacco. It's a large and organised business, with supply cars, stash cars and spotters outside shops. More illegal tobacco is sold here than legal. Purity unknown, criminals enriched and no tax raised.

And what is the planned minimum legal age for buying cannabis in this utopia? 16? Many dope smokers are younger than that, so the illegal trade will continue for a) under-age sale and b) tax evading sales.

Cannabis is not an effective treatment for common mental health conditions despite the global surge in patients using it for that purpose, a review has found. Researchers concluded there was “very little evidence for its efficacy” in treating anxiety, anorexia nervosa, psychotic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder or opioid use disorder.
No because it actually causes these symptoms along with paranoia

But surely you agree that alcohol causes ill-health and crime, so it should be banned.
Not when consumed in a normal context it is not a problem, only when drank to excess does it become an issue for some.

Are you saying that mind-altering substances should be permitted if sold in controlled conditions at limited strength?

No I don't see any point of taking something that you have no control over once taken and puts you into a state of zombie like as an immediate effect. Drinking alcohol is controllable by the amount you consume, imagine if you had a half of lager and it put you straight into a drunken stuper?

So you'd be happy with a low-dose spliff sold in licenced premises.

But not with bottles of vodka swigged by 18-year olds or 80-year olds who have no regard for health damage.

A low dosed spliff I wouldn't mind so much, that is more social than popping pills or injecting yourself. No issues with Vodka being consumed either, in France it is perfectly acceptable for children to drink wine with a meal.

You don't agree with controls on people swigging bottles of vodka.

Deliberately intoxicating themselves with no care to the damage resulting.
