From vague recollection, I think the machines do have sensors and won't accept a ticket if they sense the vehicle isn't there.

Maybe. If I use a péage again I'll pull further forward. But I stopped in the same place at the pay up front one and it took my money OK. Also some drivers in LHD vehicles were having problems, though they got through eventually.
On this subject, I was thinking of popping over before Xmas to stock up on stuff, but there's foot and mouth on the continent so can't bring cheese back - according to the UK government website. But UK supermarkets have plenty of French and other continental cheeses, so how does that work? Does anybody know what's going on here?
Just got back from a couple of weeks in France. On the ferries, many passengers don't wait for the announcement to return to vehicles, they congregate found the stairs when only halfway across the channel. What's the matter with these people? They surely don't imagine they'll disembark any sooner. The quicker they get to the car deck the longer they're breathing exhaust fumes from the idiots who ignore the instruction to start engine just before moving.
IIRC this only started happening in the last few years. Reminds me of folk on flights who leap up and open the overhead lockers the instant the seat belt sign goes out, and then have to stand for 15 minutes with a cricked neck.

We've just got the ferry back from France and we saw the same. It's not getting them off it any quicker. In fact there was a line of cars next to ours when the doors opened for disembarking that had to wait as the car at the front didn't have a driver
Sailed Portsmouth to Saint Malo last night, no issues with passport control but our friends who went Dover to calais missed their ferry due to a 4 hour delay around security.
Spent the morning strolling around Saint Malo then the afternoon at Mont Saint-Michel.
Tomorrow we're on to the east of Paris where were on a caravan site for 3 days then 2 days at disneyland, Monday at Amiens then Tuesday travel home ready to have little one back to school Wednesday.

I went Dover-Calais on Sunday 9 Aug no particular problem. Came back Friday 21st and got a text from DFDS saying get to the port 120 mins before sailing time (there was rain forecast) and with a link that didn't work. I took that with a pinch of salt and got there 90 mins before.
Approaching Calais port an overhead sign said something like "ETAS needed for travel to UK" so I feared a problem! But nothing serious, a queue 20 mins at French passport control, and a shorter one at UK passport.
Checked on the web since getting back and at some point an ETIAS visa waiver will be needed, but it's not due to happen for a while. If somebody tries to sell you one and charge for it, it's a scam.
