Visiting France

I got out of the car and put the ticket in the slot, it made an encouraging noise but didn't pull the ticket in. Tried it every way round, naturally. I've wondered since whether I should have driven further forward before getting out of the car, but I doubt it would have helped.
The first section I paid on entry, €5-90, after that it was take a ticket.
From vague recollection, I think the machines do have sensors and won't accept a ticket if they sense the vehicle isn't there.

Maybe. If I use a péage again I'll pull further forward. But I stopped in the same place at the pay up front one and it took my money OK. Also some drivers in LHD vehicles were having problems, though they got through eventually.

On this subject, I was thinking of popping over before Xmas to stock up on stuff, but there's foot and mouth on the continent so can't bring cheese back - according to the UK government website. But UK supermarkets have plenty of French and other continental cheeses, so how does that work? Does anybody know what's going on here?
