Whilst watching 'Rogue Traders' the other week I saw a gas fitter being pulled up as he wasn't Corgi registered (He'd done the exam but had not yet recieved the results, he did pass apparently) but his boss was. How does this work?
Do you have to be Corgi registered to work on gas appliances or can the firm you work for be the one to hold the registration?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question to those in the know but I was just curious.
Cheers, Tim.

You receive the results of your ACS as soon as you have done them .

No they don't , they can work under the companies corgi

The business holds the Corgi registration.

The registered operative(s) of the business must be competent, eg hold the relevant ACS to work on the relevant gas item.

The operative is then issued with a business Corgi card stating (on the back) which aspects of gas work they are competent at.

This applies to sole traders and British Gas engineers alike.

Couldn't put it better meself :)

Tabs, it takes upto 20 days for your examing body to notify corgi that you've passed your ACS so in therory if your exams are sat on the day your old ones expire you could have a 20 day wait before working on gas again.

The Rogue Traders researchers were stretching the story, as always, a bit thin. This chap had passed the exams and apparently was just waiting for his card to come through.

Once they had set up the scam and cameras they just couldn't afford to let it go. If you edited out the 'story' from most of their programmes you'd get 5-6 mins telly at the most.

Its more like an expose linked to the Generation Game.

All they do is ring up the local trading standards dept, get a few regular offenders, and invite them round. The ever gullible public think it is a lottery and they have a similar chance of netting a rogue to what they see on TV.

It should be prefaced with a warning that it shopuld be given the same gravitas as an epsiode of the Magic Roundabout.

Come to think of it, the Magic Roundabout had high production values

Its all semantics- you get told there and then whether u have passed- the fact corgi don't officially know for so many days ? what does it matter

The assessment centre will only tell you that asa far as they are concerned you have passed.

However, the test still has to be ratified by the examination organisation who then advise CORGI electronically.

Its rather scandalous that they take 4-6 weeks to do that!

Technically you should not work until CORGI have been notified. If you are competent then its questionable what could go wrong. Problem is that, many people pass the ACS when they are not very competent.

Several years ago when I passed my initial ACS (3 days in the first week of December); I finally got my £orgi card nearly 4 MONTHS later. Due to the renewals process happening at the same time for everyone registered new entrants are pushed to the bottom of the queue.

Reality is as Roque Traders showed, ACS (and £orgi) means jack **** when it comes to boiler repairs.
