Namsag, you really are a muppet, If you were as you say you are a corgi engineer, why do you not understand the regulations, as a corgi registered engineer it is your duty to report any gaswork attempted by an unqualified person if you are so confident that you are correct with regards diy gas work why don't you post your corgi regisration number on this forum and all the advice you give along with doctor whomever, then if something goes wrong we can trace it back to who gave the advice to someone unqualified. I am sorry you think I cannot have an adult discussion when I discuss something with one I'll let you know.

3. - (1) No person shall carry out any work in relation to a gas fitting or gas storage vessel unless he is competent to do so.
This is the catch-all and would seem to apply to DIY work; though I have never heard of any DIyer being prosecuted for breaking this regulation.

surely competent means qualified, previously qualified or had some sort of training and not just someone who thinks there good at diy?[/quote]

I suggest you ask Tommy the question, at a face to face meeting with your leader neither he nor any of the other Corgi guys in the room could define Competence.

At the same meeting he said that DIY gas was not a problem, it is also on the HSE web site somewhere, or should I say was.

Whilst being competent he would still be contravening the Gas Safety Regs by not being a member of a class of persons recognised by the HSE (CORGI for the time being).
The point is anybody competent is unlikely to get caught and prosecuted.

No they wouldn't, read the regs.

You do not need to be an member blah blah to DIY gas in the home or for some charity work.

oh dear i have started something here. It was not my intention to upset anyone just simply point out if you
There are more honest engineers out there than bad, and if you are unhappy with any work undertaken you can complain to corgi.

I will leave you to decide for yourselves but i urge you make the right decision don't try to DIY !!!!!!!!

Thats not what you said

t is not about ripping people off it is about safety let us not forget the two small children that died abroad last year because of poorly maintained gas appliances, many of you i am sure have children why take the risk!!!

Glad you brought this up, what Are Corgi doing wasting RGI's money interfering with gas work that is outside of their jurisdiction.
Or did a few suits fancy an holiday on us.

I never wire up any boiler I install.

I have an electrician who does the boiler ,boiler controls, supplementary bonding and the MEB to the gas and the main bonding to the incomming cold main if required and I sleep at night knowing the installation is safe and in addition the customer pays the required £150 to the spark.

Is your electrician a member of the kennel club.

If you want to give advise fine do so simply put your corgi number with the advise given that would save all this disscusion and protect those you gave advise to!!! or simply advise as you are supposed to that you should call a qualified engineer!!!! it does not matter how much you argue the law is the law it is there to protect you and everyone else!!!!

Gasman 1971.

You never answered the question

As an Kennel club inspector what are you dong installing anything, or are you allowed to moonlight when no-ones looking.

And are you Corgi registered in your own right, if so who does your inspection.

People will DIY whether you like it or not, B&Q for example are on the Corgi Council, are you about to tell them they can no longer sell Flueless fires etc.
RGI's are very reluctant too, because they are dangerous in the first degree, and your leader agrees.

Talking of stupid I would use a stronger word but it will get edited.
How can the Kennel club sit in an office sending out safety certificates without checking every one first.
Your leader is worried about that as well.

Giving advice may just make them that bit safer.

It does not matter how much you argue the law, DIY gas is not illegal

No longer the proud owner of QA gas status

any way of too bed got to be up early to rip off all those unsuspecting customers who can not wait to open their wallets for me

What puzzles me is that there are a number of guys here who have quite clearly put in the effort and or expense of obtaining an ACS and have then been registered which will have cost either their companies or themselves hard earned cash, plus have the expense of their public liabillity, upkeep of tools and vehicle, so a fair amount of cash has been spent which must be recovered yet these same people are happy to tell their potential customers that it is fine to DIY their own gas... At the moment all is going quite swimmingly but as money gets tighter are these same guys going to bellyache about how hard things are and that more and more of their customers are doing their own gas work?

I couldn't give a rats ar$e as to whether or not it is legal.. I'm running a business and every DIY self fix is money lost... Be honest would you guys do your job if you weren't making a decent living out of it? Talk about shooting yourselves in the foot....

Helping folk to be more informed so that their gas fitter does not blind them with bull$hit is one thing but undermining your own trade is another.
