stopping the wizard thing

I'm no expert on registry entries - I only ever do what the registry cleaner asks - but I always back it up first so that if anything goes wrong, I can reinstate it.

The Microsoft Active Sync - was that loaded before you had the problem or has the problem arisen at the same time as you loaded that?

I found out from the microsoft website that there's problems with Active sync and Vista and I was just wondering if it was that that was maybe causing a problem - was that to do with your old phone?

You can't use ActiveSync with Vista - you have to use Windows Live Mobile Device Media Synchroniser Centre™ (or some such stupid b*llocky name).

That'll be why they're having problems with it then!!

I'm wondering if running Hijack This and getting the report from that and posting it up on one of the computer forums would help. They might be able to see if something obvious is there and tell you how to rectify it.

Oooooh, can you decipher them?

Well need to wait on Rocky333 coming back on and telling him to do that.

I'm impressed and bow to your knowledge.

I'm a "click on it and hope for the best" kinda girl!!

You can send me the HJT log if you wish.
Sorry I missed this, as I went out

Thanks softus,
Unfortunately I dont know what that is , so I dont know ,If it is a wind up or not.
If it is something I should not divulge then I best not,

If it is safe to disclose ,then I apoligise.
In that case I am prepared to give it a go if you dont mind.
If I need to do a back up, though, I dont think I have anything to do a back up with,

I dont want to put you all out too much as It will proberly be changed soon.
If it is a big job , leave it rather than waste your time

The rest of the family want the vista , so I will be going for that soon now , although I may regret it from what I read.
When I do copy over to vista will these faults transfer with it though.

I take it all the other stuff did not help.

When I googled pci device wizard
It seems quite common, and mentioned plug and play and motherboards
etc.
Thats why I went into the registry to find the pci device
And I was lost in there

alison
sorry I missed you too
The active sync is fairly old , as said earlier this seems ok and that phone comes up as usb or something, that also shows up with an icon in the "other devices"

I could remove that though as I still have the disc
Anything else that May be a phone or camera I can remove and redo later
I think I may need to get rid of the "registry smart"
I am sure i put that on last year, some how from a website, by mistake

If anything to go by 412 problems
shall i give up

is this the sort of thing there is lots of it
This is from registry smart i think

Tell me the best place to get it and what you want me to do next, and I will sort it asap
thanks

In that case you can't take a backup, which means that you risk losing files of which you have only one copy.

I don't know what "copy over to vista" means. Do you?

Did you also read the advice that discourages you from editing the registry?

If you're planning on upgrading to Vista, then yes, you're gonna still have these problems. In fact, you might even have more cos I think there's a lot of things that don't work with Vista - like the Active Sync as Softus has just told me.

Please please don't go into the registry and tinker if you're not sure what you're doing. I've only ever edited in the registry a couple of times and that was with very explicit instructions so I couldn't go wrong.

Download CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) You don't have to do any registry editing here, but if you do, you click scan for issues, have a look at what it brings up, you fix selected issues and it will ask you if you want to back up your registry. Before you do ANYHING make sure you back it up - that way if anything goes wrong, you can re-instate the old registry. You can also add and remove programmes on this (but only remove it if you actually know what it is - if in doubt, leave it). You can also edit your start up with it and that might help solve your problem. Again, don't remove things from the startup unless you know what they are - a screen shot of this might be a help.

To be honest, I'd be looking at the start up before I did anything else with CCleaner - it's under tools.

You can also clear out cookies and internet history and things but if you don't want to be doing that, then don't run that section.

Like I said, make sure you read it carefully, understand what it's going to do and BACK UP THE REGISTRY before you remove anything.

Apart from the pictures there is nothing, if possible would it be possible to put them on a disc or sd card.

The main thing is the sky wireless router,as I am on xp now, not sure if it works with vista, till i phone sky or find the book for it, I will also need to find the disc, unless I can back that up ,but quessing that may not work with vista.

Isuppose I need to get something proper to do a full back up before I install the vista
Iwas thinking an external harddrive or something, can you advise anything to buy, just for that.

When I do copy over to vista will these faults transfer with it though.
I don't know what "copy over to vista" means. Do you?
when i do so, before I remove the xp and copy the files from my harddrive, when I install the vista, and reload my files back on to the harddrive ,I suppose any faults I copied will also be put back on to the harddrive again

Thats why I went into the registry to find the pci device

Did you also read the advice that discourages you from editing the registry?

I read the advise, I looked in there just to see if there was more info onthe pci device
I had no intention of editing anything
I did note i think it is called Napstar in there though,
the problems including the loss of sound occured about the time i loaded that.may be a coincidence though.
i expanded that and there was an option to delete the key, i was unsure what they meant by key,
I would like to uninstall that but did not see it in remove programs
i could not find active sync in remove prog although it is in the start menu I would like to uninstall tht also

In the add/remove prog
I have uninstalled things i know i loaded, however" Egog games"will not uninstall there, this was loaded off a cd but never worked for some reason it asks if you want to remove it, says set up status,
then maintenance complete , but is still there, unlike the others that uninstalled and went

Thanks for the help,I have to go out now though.
I will look back asap
If you feel I should take the computer somewhere and get it serviced, Iwill do that.

Have you got a DVD writer on your computer?

I backed up all my photos, documents, music onto a rewritable DVD (one that you can use more than once) - it holds a lot more than a CD.

In fact, I've got back ups of back ups.............sad person that I am.

I also have an external hard drive. It's a Maxtor 320GB drive - got it in PC World for about £55.

I must admit, you've got a lot of things on your computer that I wouldn't have - but that's just me. Toolbars and things.

Napster is a music download thing is it not? I used to use Limewire but got loads of spyware with it.

If you're not finding ways of removing programmes from the Add/Remore programmes bit, check if there's an uninstall option in your Programmes. Failing that, you should be able to remove unwanted programmes with CCleaner.

Suggest you run an anti-spyware as well - I use AVG anti-spyware (free), Spybot Search and Destroy and also the spyware remover that's on my Firewall (PC Tools). Not that I'm paranoid or anything!!
