Holy Smoke

No, you claimed Johnny D. was in favour of turning pubs into drug dens when he said nothing of the kind. That's not an opinion, it's flat out wrong.
Read his post, John often gets his words wrong and gets mine wrong too.

I knew a faily senior copper who was obsessed with legalising canabis because it would lead to crime reduction. I couldn't get through to him that crime is like any other business, and that I would rather have people killing themselves with drugs than - for example - maffia style kidnapping for ransome.

correct. It was clear what he wrote. There is of course no evidence that legalising and controlling weed reduces organised crime, they simply move on.
There is evidence it does so, but government is too scared to prove the claim with a nationwide policy.

No what the studies show, is that one type of crime is reduced and then as if by magic, another increases.

Odds thinks that if you make the drugs legal then all of the criminal gangs will go on the dole or get jobs.

Why would anyone want this legalised:
  • Addiction: between 1:10 and 1:6 will become addicted
  • Mental Health: Linked to an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, particularly in those with a genetic predisposition. It can also worsen symptoms of depression and anxiety.
  • Brain Development: Using marijuana before the age of 25—while the brain is still developing—can permanently impair memory, learning, and attention.
  • Respiratory System: Smoking marijuana can cause chronic cough, phlegm, and lung infections. It contains many of the same toxins and carcinogens as tobacco smoke.
  • Digestive Issues: In rare cases, chronic users develop Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), characterized by severe, recurring bouts of vomiting and abdominal pain.
But on the upside:
  • Fertility: Research suggests frequent use may lower sperm count in men and suppress ovulation in women, potentially affecting the ability to conceive.
It will just create more people unable to sustain work with enough pay, to contribute more in taxes than they drain.
