1940s exLA house ground floor construction

One of my kids has bought an ex Local Authority house. The previous owners built an extension which was 99% finished when they sold it. Just a bit of floor levelling, paint and flooring to be done. The original house floor and the extension floor are not at the same height, only a few mm here...

Rain coming into house via logburner flue

My daughter has just bought a house with recently installed log burner in it. Yesterday a fair amount of water pooled on top and underneath the log burner, so she contacted the installer who said it was normal, his did it too!! Maybe he likes to replace his decor each time, but my daughter...

    Rendering over plaster externally?

As well as some iffy issues elsewhere on a house that is a potential purchase, there is a large area ( half height of the side wall) of plaster where a garage used to be. The estate agent says the vendors 'builder' will render over this as its too difficult to remove it. First, is it that hard...

Broken brickwork below dpc and doorway

Potential purchase of a house, but the apparently poor workmanship is worrying. There used to be a garage attached to the house, which has recently been torn down, leaving broken bricks ( where the garage was keyed into the house) with holes going into the cavity. This is unsightly but fixable...

    HETAS certificate null and void?

Since a disgraceful install by a registered HETAS bloke in May 2023, it was condemned by a HETAS inspector before even being used. Its been a long running battle ever since. Is the HETAS certificate null and void? I have not been informed that it is, but it was mentioned to me recently that it...

Gap between beading gasket and glass

I've fitted a few windows myself and not had any issues but notice on the one I'm doing now that there is a gap between the black gasket and the glass. Its tight in the corners, but as you go along, the gap gets bigger to about 2mm in the middle. This is a bigger window than the others, so the...

Logburner install. Seal or not seal?

A Hetas fitter has installed a logburner in my home, but not sealed the join at the collar to stove pipe. I didn't see him seal anything at the join between the stove pipe and flue adaptor either. He didn't use anything when joining the flue liner to the adaptor, as he said its not needed. He...

Are Marley Double Roman Smooth Grey roof tiles painted/coloured?

Hi Can anyone tell me if Marley roof tiles ( or any other brand ) are painted or is the colouring added into the concrete mix? I have a Smooth Grey Double Roman sample and it does seem to be obviously painted, with the top edge left unpainted, exposing the lighter coloured concrete substrate...

No weep holes in upvc frame?

Maybe it's me, but I would expect that a upvc window frame with weep holes on the outside, should have weep holes on the inside too. A frame that I ordered ( and have had some manufacturing issues with) has been supplied like this, so I wanted a confirmation before I hear back from the supplier.

Foundations for conservatory with dwarf wall and tiled roof

Does a conservatory built with dwarf walls and a tiled roof need to be treated as an extension? As I understand it, an extension needs foundations deep enough to carry a two storey build, but a conservatory doesnt. Due to access, any digging would have to be manual, hence my reason for asking...

Anyone heard of a company called Elegant? (showers and bathrooms)

I'm looking for shower doors and was about to spend £300 when I saw this company, Elegant-based in UK, selling what seems to be a decent set for £150. Anyone heard of them?

Slim ceiling joist - where to get shallow downlights for bathroom?

Hi I want to replace the single pendant light with a few LED downlights in the bathroom, but am having trouble finding a source of such lights that are shallow enough to fit in the roof void due to the joists being quite shallow. Most downlight are 85mm depth or more, but I need around 60mm to...

    another waterproofing question

Hi all Having boarded out the shower area with Delta Boards, I'm now puzzled at the the next step. I was told by the supplier, Tileflair, that I only need to silicone the joints and corners, then tile. The cement delta boards are only water-resistant/waterproof, the cement based Magix-S tile...

Mira Flight low tray - bent

My Mira Flight tray arrived yesterday and immediately it 'looked' bent like a banana. I dismissed it but when I put a plasterers edge along it, it was out by around 5mm or so in the middle measuring along the top edge and measuring the bottom edge of course meant that it was 5mm or so at both...

Stone Shower tray + riser legs.. what stops it sliding?

I have a 1200 x 760 'Iflo' ( City Plumbing) stone resin shower tray and bought the optional leg kit, mainly just to suss out how these legs work. I initially planned to fit the tray onto a waterproof ply base supported on a timber frame, because it seemed to be a better, stronger solution...

Tanking and Tiling onto bonding/rough plaster?

I've posted this in the plastering forum as well as I'm not sure where the proper place would be for advice. ( turns out that post was removed because I was so naughty as to duplicate a post) I doing up the bathroom - new tiles etc. The old tiles in the bathroom are coming off reasonably...

Water Authority and Washing machine to rain water...advice.

I live in a 1940's built house, my washing machine is in the back of the outhouse and I've just been told that I have to re route the waste to a sewer drain within 30 days. I've lived in this house for 14 years and the washing machine has always been in the same place and was in the same place...

    Worx - a cautionary tale.

I have posted this within another thread but posted it here in case it is useful to anyone considering buying any Worx products. A week ago, the chuck jammed open without warning. It;s over a year old, so the tool is now useless, but hooray, there is a 3 year warranty on it...fantastic. So I...

Mapei Eco Prim Grip - any good?

Has anyone used ( or would recommend using) Mapei Eco Prim Grip or similar? I realise that tiling onto properly sound wallls is best, but my bathroom is coverd top to toe in ceramic tiles by the previous owner, so I was wondering about tiling on top to save time? The bathroom is in constant...

    Police called about a fence!!!

I often read about how neighbour disputes over fences are of no interest to the Police, however it would appear that although the UK is now on critical alert for terror attacks, our local Police can find the time to despatch two officers (actual Police, not PCSOs) to discuss just such a dispute...
