80mph limit on motorways.

What's all the rush anyway? Lower it to 60 and make public transport fast and comparable in price.

As the fuel crisis really begins to bite (not far away) the speed will be reduced to 60 - and the roads will be half deserted.

It's not going to happen anyway because the government can't justify the extra loss of life or the extra 20% fuel wasted. Not only that, when people realise how much extra it would cost to travel at 80 rather than 70 they'll sit in the middle lane on 70.

Why not make lane 1 compulsory 58mph.

Lane 2 compulsory 70,

and lane 3 can be left for the idiots that will always do what they want anyway.

Has anyone provided realistic evidence to show an increase in deaths? after all, many countries use 80mph, and of course Germany !!

as for increased fuel consumption, maybe that's what the government want.... increased fuel consumption = increased tax revenue?!!

Use your brain martian. The impact at 80mph is much greater than at 70mph. Something to do with the square root rather than a linear scale.

But the main problem is that you'll have trucks doing 58 in the slow lane and cars doing 85 -90 in the middle lane. Can you see that there might be a problem there?

no need to be rude Joe. But you're talking about the result, whereas i'm asking about the cause...

as for a speed differential of 32mph, that's not a cause of accidents. It may be an increase in the damage caused.

The cause is the speed differential. If 2 cars collide at 70mph what will the damage be? Bent wing mirror? If they collide one at 56 and one at 90 what will the carnage be?

driving at a different speed to someone else does not... and i emphasise... DOES NOT cause accidents!!!

It is the MAIN cause.

you're one of these people that can't accept being wrong !!!

lack of ability, lack of awareness, and not being able to deal with the unexpected are more likely to be the main reasons for accidents.... the scale of the accident is just magnified so much more at higher speed.

Imagine a motorway where all the vehicles travel at 70mph. Where will the crashes come from? It's differential that is the cause. Stop being silly and LEARN from the master.

this is laughable...

all vehicles travelling at 70mph??... so what about... a vehicle has a blowout !! or a driver falls asleep...? or someone isn't concentrating, and the old "brake light ripple" appears... mr non concentrator brakes harder that expected.... and mr non concentrator(2) behing him/her... rams up their jacksie !!!

it is not differing speeds that CAUSES accidents !!!! wake up Joe !!

Why the assumption that everyone will suddenly start driving at 85-90 ...... the majority will probably drive at the same speed that they do now.
MOST people drive at a speed that they feel safe and in control
.....there are always idiots that drive like madmen and they will still do so regardless of the speed limit.
Most accidents are caused by lack of concentration, bad judgement and inconsiderate driving regardless of speed.

And what if they happen when changing lanes one travelling at 58 the other at 88? Gedditt yet?

you obviously don't drive joe!!!! if you want to overtake a car in the middle lane, and need to pull into the fast lane, you check to see what's there (in reality you should know anyway.... really), and you assess their distance and speed and decide if it's safe to pull out in front of them, or if you wait for them to pass !!

It's simple road awareness Joe....!!!
