Millions of British households could face three-hour rolling blackouts after a new electricity grid rule was quietly implemented this week. The National Energy System Operator (Neso) will reportedly be able to initiate blackouts more quickly and easily to conserve power supplies when supplies are running low.
Seem to have heard that before Is it a Labour Party thing although I think they have failed to update, today homes have solar, so turning off homes could cause us to lose microgeneration.

The transition to renewables leads to increasingly difficult conditions for the grid. Sometimes you have an excess of power, other times it's very tight, sometimes you have power but it's in the wrong place and you lack the capacity to get it where it needs to go. Peak demand in the UK is in the early evening which very much does not line up with peak solar production.
Battery systems can help, but it remains to be seen how much.
That said, the 8 hour thing seems weird to me, I would expect them to try to keep all the lights on for as long as possible, and only drop customers as an absolute last resort.

i read your post from a couple of months ago about Callahan and reluctance to use electric for heating and trying to connect to the reluctance off some now and then and the difference is quite big
then an industrial relations issue and no cop leverage or alternative ways to supply electricity cheaper so no where compatible in any way
as in gas' paraffin'coal less than half the price so only an idiot would select far more expensive [2 to 4 times the price]electric by default
and an infrastructure problem with electric distribution and use due to wrong capacity issues now rather than reduced capacity due to restricted generation 50 years ago via strikes
