i'm sure mine when I bought it didnt darken, I left it in the sun for an hour and then it worked fine. I always test if they are working before use by looking at a 240v light (the 50hz flicker trips them) sunlight or DC lights won't.

Actually, rereading the OP, Harry's auto-darkens (or not, currently).

On my Snap-On one, the screen is dark. I turn it on and it goes light. The millisecond I start welding, it darkens. Stop welding and it immediately lightens. I can adjust sensitivity as well as the amount of darkness too.

I used to test mine by flicking a lighter - the sparks should make it darken automatically.

Always wondered about auto-dimming welding masks.
So, they fail-to-danger?
Not a risk I'd like to take (with the old peepers).

There's no risk, they have a fixed shade that is enough to protect your eyes anyway

Mine has no switch, just 3x adjusters for delay, darkness and something else..

I'll be doing that later. It's still not working, despite a day out in the sun.
