I don't see it as deflection, he was not a terrorist because of where he came from or his skin colour, in fact he had no links to religious fundamentalism. He was more like the deranged types who carry out school shootings in the US. But knives (and poisonous sites on the internet) will always be available. I suspect loads of kids take knives into school with little or no punishment if they are caught.

I've never had personal experience of knife crime at school in any capacity, but the guidance of randomly googled Notts CC suggests possession of a knife is a 101 call if no immediate threat
The sentencing council guidelines for pupils charged suggested non custodial sentence in cases where it is "a fleeting incident and no/ minimal distress" with mitigating factors including "participated in offence due to bullying etc". Further personal mitigating circumstances include:
- Particularly young or immature child or young person
- Mental health concerns
- Unstable upbringing
(In other words the mental health of the child carrying the weapon is a mitigating factor in his/her case)
I am not saying these factors would have let off Axle or prevented him from what he did, but it is certainly seems possible for a child to bring a knife into school and not be excluded or even charged with an offence.
This is backed by an OFSTED paper from 2019. Look at para. 47 and 57, which suggest that in some schools at least exclusion is a last resort. I suspect they are inner city schools with big knife carrying problems

His skin colour has nothing to do with it in my mind. His religion is an unknown. It is the terrorist manual, the making of the ricin and the armoury of weapons which screams terrorism to me. Also, characteristics of the attack; not gang related nor a personal vendetta, as the victims were unknown to him.

I don't buy the generic 'mental health problems' sweep away. Lots of people suffer with their mental health but they don't go out and do this. I said on a different thread about whether he had been diagnosed for psychopathy or not prior to his killing spree, I can see nothing about that in the available news at the moment though.
