What like refusing to deal with kidnappers?
If you start with a policy of trying to achieve or maintain something, you ought to be aware of the costs along the way.
Then, if you get so far, and decide the costs aren't worth the benefits, you shouldn't try to maintain that policy.
If you pretend you are maintaining that policy when you are clearly not, you've lost the moral high ground, and fallen to a deeper level, because you've added hypocrisy to your list of shenanigans.

As I said, UK is on the UN list of shame for removing citizenship form their citizens.
Not a comfortable place to be for a government that claims the moral high ground.
