In the old days, nobody paid university tuition fees (I bet Theresa May didn't) and there were maintenance grants depending on parent income. The country is richer now than it was then.
Apart from billionaire tax dodgers and multinationals (that's another story) most of us pay tax which varies according to income.
Perhaps you resent not having to put money in a meter to get your street lamps to work, and not having to pay the fire brigade if your house catches fire.

My dispute is with Labour's use of the word "free".
We all pay a little. Those that can afford to should pay more
That conveniently misses a key factor, a huge increase in the numbers of students going to university.
And combined with the exponential rise of non vocational degrees.
yep study some ology course , or drama , dancing or some other nonsense and expect every one else to pay for it ?

Is it still Free in Scotland? Up to a few years ago university education in Scotland was free if you were Scottish, or from another EU country- except if that country was England,Wales or Northern Ireland, in which case you were fleeced.
Some stupid pizzed up bloke down the road set fire to kitchen whilst cooking chips t'uther day. Suppose I'll have to pay for that too.

The tone was hysterical: as polling day approached, the Daily Mail devoted 13 pages to smearing Corbyn and his allies as terrorist sympathisers. It did not have the desired effect. It was a bit like an eccentric raving on a bus about impending Armageddon. The result is all the other passengers uncomfortably looking into their lap: just too OTT to take seriously. Voters looked at their shrinking pay packets, growing debt and the booming wealth of the elite while services were starved of cash – and rewarded Labour with 40% of the vote. At his party’s conference, Corbyn jokingly pleaded with the Daily Mail to make it 28 pages of smears next time."

Tory MP Ben Bradley, best known for being forced to apologise after calling for vasectomies for “unemployed wasters”, was forced to delete a potentially libellous tweet about this concocted story after Corbyn threatened to sue him."
