Are engine designs really that advanced now that the oil companies have to blend oils for specific engines?

For example, Granville making a Ford Zetec oil and Mannol making a Nissan/Renault oil, both oils are 5w30!

It's not so much the viscosity these days, more the other ratings - A1/B1/C3 etc etc. Depends on petrol, Diesel, turbo, catalyst, DPF blah blah blah.

Ive never really been a Castrol fan but have used Valvoline and Fuchs products before based on their reputation, they seem to do rather well in those tests.
The Quantum longlife comes out ok too.

Problem these days is that manufacturers won't honour the warranty if you haven't used their specific oil and they do tests to see if you have.

Actually, under block exemption, they are not allowed to. No vehicle manufacturer makes their own oil so all they can specify is the oil specification. Same with filters. Should you have a problem under guarantee, the onus is on the manufacturer to prove that the materials you used were not of the correct specification.

40 years in the motor trade and I have never heard of a claim being refused because incorrect lubricants were used. Has anybody?

How long do engine warranties last exactly?

When you buy new you have to have the services done at a dealer approved garage so there should be no quibble.

If the warranty has expired and the engine breaks, its your own pocket surely?

No you don't. That's what used to be called Restrictive Practices and is now illegal.

It has to be done to the manufacturer's service schedule though.

Does the warranty allow the car owner to change the oil and filter if they recorded the mileage in the service book and kept the oil and filter receipts?

You need to carry out the whole service as per the manufacturers service schedule using at least equivalent quality parts. All manufacturers will supply you with a service schedule if asked.

Is this oil suitable for 2006 Nissan Primera 1.8 petrol?

Look up the recommended grade for your car on the manufacturer's website, or the biggest oil brands like Castrol will do it if you put in your registration number (they tend to push their most expensive lines).

For example

Older engines were not designed to need the latest and thinnest oils available today.

I've done the oil check on several sites and 5w30 is recommended.

Mannol 7706 is rated for petrol and diesel, I'm just wondering if ACEA C4 is too heavy with diesel additives?

Wouldn't have thought C4

This is what the Halfords site shows for a 2006 Primera 1.8 petrol - basically your run-of-the-mill oil as used by older Ford models.
