Could Russia hang on a bit till we get the right diversity to fight them

Exactly where is the injustice in saying 'breast feeding a baby' and 'women's/girl's periods'?

The RAF should be recruiting the best candidates and should absolutely not be rejecting white males in favour of women/minorities for no other reason than to meet diversity targets.

That's the whole point of the OP. The recruitment officer wasn't prepared to prioritise one ethnic group over another or at the expense of suitable Caucasians. If you're good enough, it shouldn't matter what your colour or creed is.
The problem with that approach is that you will never reduce the very real problem of racism, sexism, etc in the military while it is excessively dominated by white males.

Even if a majority of the white males suddenly became 'woke' (and that's never going to happen while it's dominated by white males) the public will continue to view it with its historical racist and sexist culture.
You need diversity to correct the culture and to have a public image reflecting an equal and fair organisation. You can only achieve that initially by making adjustments to your recruitment policies. Without those adjustments, the organisation will continue to be perceived as a racist and sexist organisation dominated by white males, and not representative of society.

Once the organisation has rid itself of its racist and sexist, etc culture, then the true meritocracy can be applied.

In making those adjustments an organisation should take care to not tip the scales too far in order to placate a minority, by admitting or promoting an individual, regardless of race, over another deserving individual.

But if the fully deserving 'minority' are not applying because of the known racist and sexist culture?
What then?
Allow the racist and sexist culture to continue unabated, unresolved?

No.
Keep on pushing that rock uphill, as Obama said. Sometimes it'll roll back on you but that's no reason to stop.

the simplest way is just to increase the numbers slightly, so none of those meeting the criteria are not admitted, with an allowance to increase the specifically targeted.

but there is always a cutback on numbers too, which affects all the criteria numbers

Sounds convoluted to me but keep on bangin' the rocks together.(y)

placate the minority who want to perpetuate the dominance of middle class white males?

in the same way that UK forces should not have spent the last 200 years disadvantaging anybody who was not a white middle class English male. And continue to do today.

did you ever complain about that?

To placate those middle class white males that want to perpetuate the racist and sexist culture is to be subservient to that culture. And no-one has suggested that is a minority of the personnel of the military.
Surely a more proactive (or reactive) approach is to penalise those middle class white males that want to perpetuate the dominant racist and sexist culture. But then in all likelihood a majority of personnel of the military will be penalised.

Edit. My apologies JohnD. I misunderstood your irony. I read your post in isolation. It's on reflection I realised it was an ironic response to another's comment.

And how exactly have they done that?

Anybody can apply to join the Armed Forces. If they meet the criteria, they're in and if they don't, they are quite rightly rejected.

do you know what "disadvantage" means?

Have you read the posts you dislike?

Yes I do thanks but I'm not sure you do.

In order for certain people to be disadvantaged, they would have to have been subjected to different criteria to that applied to white males at the time they applied.

Do you have any evidence of that ever happening?

At the end of the day, you can't force women/BAME to apply to join our Armed Forces. So the idea that recruiting more of them at the expense of white males in order to stop racism/sexism is, frankly, laughable.
