Doctors threaten to quit NHS over shortage of protective kit

You've implied there is a lack of PPE because the Govt didn't instruct NHS trusts to order it and wouldn't let them have the money in any case.
NHS over spend last year was about 4 billion,

You're telling lies purely to score political points against the Govt, it's all you ever do

There is a lack of PPE because central government didnt react quickly enough.
You cant admit it because you voted for this government and its buffoonery

Why didnt we join the EU procurement effort to secure PPE equipment ?

Well they marshalled their resources and buying power to procure all they need.

The joint procurement of personal protective equipment launched by the European Commission to address the coronavirus crisis has proven successful.

Producers made offers covering and in some cases even exceeding the quantities requested by the Member States that take part in the procurement, for every single item requested. The joint procurement covers masks type 2 and 3, gloves, goggles, face-shields, surgical masks and overalls.

Exactly.
So the employer is following the work regulations, which are central government policy.

Regional health trusts do not decide on procurement for a national emergency, because the people who have the information are the government.

President Xi didnt ring my local hospital to suggest getting more masks, did he?
Who did he ring?

Correct.

Regional trusts can only deal with regional issues so unless Corona virus decided not to travel past the m25 it had to be a national decision.

EU just succeeded on securing supplies of ppe equipment, its disappointing we decided not to participate.

When Italy pleaded for medical masks

Who stepped up. To the plate

The EU  no

China ;)

A woman from a PPE company was on radio four this am and said that they'd offered PPE to the NHS and were told that it wasn't needed. So they sent the masks to Germany, Spain and chile

We're not in the EU anymore, why would they let us in?

We are in all intents and purposes still part of the EU, they did ask the UK to participate but we decided against it.

Goods still come across as normal.

I don't know why we didn't join the EU procurement effort, that's certainly worth looking into. The link implies the EU should have all the PPE they need within two weeks after the individual member states have agreed prices and signed contracts.

Given what the World Health Organisation are saying, that manufacturers need to increase production by 40% to meet global demand, and the WHO will be leaning on suppliers to prioritise them, that might be a little optimistic.

I really do hope the manufacturers can pull it off.

Which company was that?

Did she explain the reason why?

If you buy ppe equipment from a different supplier many times the masks are different so you need to fit tested again, so you try to keep to the supplier where most your staff have been fit tested.

Of course we did. *Facepalm*

Edit: not doubting it , just disappointed

Russia also sent help to Italy

"Vaguely sketched out by Italian and Russian officials in advance, the aid shipment of protective equipment, disinfecting machines, ventilators and disease specialists was personally agreed by President Vladimir Putin after a plea for help from Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte in a telephone call on Saturday evening.

With that order from the Kremlin, the ministry of defence swung into action with an overnight operation to have the nine giant IL-76 transport planes ready to depart from a Moscow airstrip on Sunday afternoon and land outside Rome a few hours later."

Italy was the European country in first and greatest need.

The UK was invited to take part in the scheme, which is leveraging the 500 million-person single market’s huge buying power to secure faster and cheaper orders with less admin at a time of extreme global demand.

But UK officials confirmed on Wednesday that Britain would not be taking part in the scheme, after previously having said the government would decide which way to go.

Dr Rinesh Parmar, chair of the Doctors’ Association UK, yesterday described the situation as “travesty” and said “the government hasn’t kept its side of the bargain with NHS staff by not having enough [personal protective equipment] available to safeguard the health of doctors and nurses”.
