The fertiliser factory...I realise it is a hazardous material and the explosion risk is high, but could this be another bomb attack?

One thing about the Yanks, they don't tend to sit and bleat about things like we do. If they feel they have been wronged, they go out and do something about it.

If this, and the Boston bomb, turn out to be caused by muslim terrorists I wouldn't like to be in a mosque right now.

Doing 'something' as a short term reaction is the problem long term eg Afghan and Iraqi invasions.

I am surprised that more people don' t contrast this attack with other fundamentalist claims post incident.

There is perhaps some irony that the Irish community in cities like like Boston were involved in fundraising on behalf of the IRA. I seem to remember that 9/11 might have changed some minds, when they started experiencing organised terrorist attacks for themselves.


I'm guessing that a fertiliser plant in the middle of nowhere is not high on the terrorists list. More than likely an accident. Interestingly, it's just up the road from Waco, where David Koresh's siege ended in the death of 76 people, 20 years ago.

From what I saw on the telly there was a fire first, then a big bang so more likely an industrial accident. Ammonium Nitrate springs to mind.

Indeed, this is not without precident. Ammonium nitrate has been involved in some of the biggest industrial explosions in history:

- In 1921, 4500 tonnes of Ammonium sulphate & ammonium nitrate blew up when they were blasting out the contents with explosives. Note that they had already done about 20,000 blasts prior to the plant blowing up.

The cargo ship Grandcamp was being loaded on April 16, 1947, when a fire was detected in the hold: at this point, 2600 tonnes of ammonium nitrate in sacks were already aboard. The captain responded by closing the hold and pumping in pressurised steam. One hour later, the ship exploded, killing several hundred people and setting fire to another vessel, the High Flyer, which was moored 250 metres away and which contained 1050 tonnes of sulfur and 960 tons of ammonium nitrate. The Grandcamp explosion also created a powerful earthshock that broke windows as far as 40 miles away and knocked two small planes flying at 1,500 feet (460 m) out of the sky. The High Flyer exploded the next day, after having burned for sixteen hours. 500 tonnes of ammonium nitrate on the quayside also burned, but without exploding, probably because it was less tightly packed. All but one member of the Texas City fire department died.

The scale of these incidents are just staggering.

I am given to bouts of sarcasm from time to time. I agree with you. If there really were a god, I'd expect him/her to do just that.
