I bought two of the following lights to fit to my living room ceiling

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4305718.htm

Anyway there are currently 2 light fittings in the living room. The standard white plastic ones with the see through ceiling rose.

The lights I have bought have a metal connector bracket that must be screwed into the ceiling. And the light itself has 3 wires, live, neutral and earth, which are wired into a plastic box which has 8 holes in it, hence there are 5 empty holes.

It looks like I need to remove the see through ceiling rose in order to screw the connector bracket to the ceiling. Hence I have no idea how to connect the wires that are coming down from the ceiling to this new light.

Coming down from the ceiling there are 2 thick white cables, each with 3 wires. They currently are all wired into the see through ceiling rose.

So I am hoping someone can advise me on what I need to do to fit these new lights.

Many thanks

Paul

Were there some instructions with the light?

There were instructions but they were generic instructions to cover all different lights and no diagrams showing any wires at all. Basically they were useless...

A step-by-step guide.

Thanks pensdown - that makes it alot clearer. It looks like I need to buy a couple of these block things and remove the see through ceiling rose that is there at the moment.

Many thanks

From your post it sounded like the connector block was supplied with your new light?

And yes you will have to remove the existing ceiling rose so mark the cables first ;)

Just to clarify my situation here are some photos:

This is what is currently on the ceiling

This is the connector that must be fixed to the ceiling

You can see the connector attached to the end of the light fitting here

There is a wire that runs through the light fitting that can be seen here

And here is the wires of the actual light

Hopefully the above should help with my question. I want to be sure I am doing the right thing:)

Thanks, that makes life so much easier.

The existing black cable with the red sleave connects to the brown in your new light.

The black cable with no sleave connects to the blue cable

The two reds connect together in the spare terminal, on the left in photolight-connector.jpg

The green and yellow cables all connect together

Thanks pensdown - I really appreciate the help!! Your explanation was very clear so thank you again!!

Just one last question.

As far as I can see there are 3 "green and yellow" wires in total i.e 2 coming down from the ceiling and one from the light itself.

It was suggested I connect all the green and yellow wires together. So does this mean I put 2 of these wires into one socket hole in the connector box and the other in the hole opposite it?

Thanks

Paul

It does not really matter as long as they are all securely attached to the same terminal.

I don't want to insult or patronise anybody, but for future reference:

Existing fitting:

Notice the two reds in the centre terminal block, plus the black, and the red-sleeved black.

Note the spare terminal.

Granted, it would be easier to see what goes where if the original ceiling rose picture had been taken before you took down the lampholder, but can you now see how to transfer the wires across from the ceiling rose to the fitting terminal block?
