What position should it be in with the hot water and heating OFF?

valve will be in position B marked on the brass body.
and the lever will have resistance on it .
and the lever will have resistance on it .
The only positions marked on the casing is MAN OPEN and MANUAL
A, B will be marked on the brass body near the compression nuts.
Oh i can see the markings A and B, but they run in opposite direction to lever.
B connects to the hot water cylinder
Thats correct, but the lever goes in opposite direction to the way the pipes face.

So what position should the lever be in before anything is turned on? The MAN OPEN position or MANUAL position
just leave in auto position.
Thats great. Don't know if it will cure it. But i'll give it a whirl
it won't cure it if the paddles faulty and passing water.
How can i check those. Do someone qualified need to look at it? or could i check it out?
you can't check them with the valve inplace only by checking the valves moving correctly.
but if the hw gets hot with only heating on and visa verser then the paddle is faulty and passing.
you can remove and fix it yourself don't have to be qualified.
