yes, with interest rates below inflation, you are guaranteed to lose value from your savings.

however this is not a "modern" problem.

A government with a large public debt often manages to inflate the currency until its debts shrivel up.

Oh, forgot to say, when I was looking for my premium bond certificates, I lifted my mattress and found some money under there that I'd completely forgotten about. I know you'd like proof so here you go: ;)
