I am so glad that Mrs Thatcher..............................

Maggie was no scumbag. When she left office the country was in much better shape than when she took office.
She stood up to the argies, the ira and the eu. A real fighter.

More than you can say for the last bunch of true scumbags who not only bankrupted the country but sold it down the river to a foreign power.

Who sold off our national services, oil, gas electric etc etc, Thatcher!

Who deregulated the city banks in the 80's, which probably caused the crisis we are in now through dodgy dealings, Thatcher!

Thatcher did you a favour- would have cost you more than it has if she allowed that mess to carry on.
Trouble is- Unfortunately you will never know or realise how bad things would have been without that action.

Thatcher only did favours for the rich and greedy of this country....no one else.

If memory serves me, was the last recession not at the end of the thatcher rule when the interest rates soared to 16%??

Proper order. Release them into the world of free enterprise and market forces where you sink or swim.

Nonsense.
It was Brown who had supervised the final deregulation of the banks, which even the High Priestess of Capitalism herself, Lady Margaret Thatcher, dared not do.

Again absolute nonsense. She was voted in three times and it wasn't the tiny minority of rich and greedy who put her there.

27million days lost to strikes in 79 with the dead unburied and streets running with rats from rubbish not collected for weeks.
Union leaders allowed to bring the country to it knees by a show of hands that no matter how many didnt want to strike the union leaders done it anyway for there own egotistical reasons .
Someone had to do something to save the country and thankfully she did.

Yeah the unions and their supporters had it coming.
Just look at the coal industry after scargils defeat.
The number of miners were cut by 40%, but coal production dropped only 15%.

Nonsense.....it was Thatcher in 1986, the Big Bang, deregulating the city....and we are now paying for it!!!!

Rubbish

Sinco .
Yeah we are importing it but even after all the shipping costs its cheaper and the supplies have never been disrupted the miners like the steel workers killed the golden goose by the sheer stupidity of its leaders and short sightedness of the workers

The UK consumed 51.2 million tonnes of coal in 2011, including 41.8 million tonnes in power stations.

Coal imports to the UK were 32.4 million tonnes, a large increase (+22.2%) on the previous year's amount, mainly as a result of power stations using less coal from their stocks. Indigenous production was similar to the previous year at 18.3 million tonnes. (Over the year, 1.0 million tonnes was lifted from stock, compared to 7.2 million tonnes in 2010.)

Coal-fired power stations provided 30% of the UK's electricity (gas 40%, nuclear 19%, others (including renewables) 11%).

UK Coal Imports

Coal is therefore a fundamental component of the UK's energy mix, and around two thirds of the nation's requirements are imported.

CoalImp - the Association of Coal Importers - believes that imported coal complements indigenous supply as a secure and essential part of the UK energy balance. Coal resources are plentiful, distributed more evenly around the globe than oil or gas, and coal is capable of being transported and stored safely.

Another mess by thatcher? Nope.
Market forces unleashed.

Why is it always Thatcher fault? Even under Harold Wilson 1 pit closed every week

264 pits closed between 1957 and 1963. 346,000 miners left the industry between 1963 and 1968. In 1967 alone there were 12,900 forced redundancies.

Falling production, falling employment, falling sales, and increasing subsidy; that was the coal industry Margaret Thatcher inherited.

She did not swoop in and kill perfectly good industries out of spite. Industries like coal and steel were already dead by the time she was elected. Thatcher just switched off the increasingly costly life support which had kept these zombie industries going.

Thatcher had a personal war against the miners, a sign of strength with nothing to do with economics, it was political...anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded.

She could have privatised the farming industry too, an industry that was massively subsidised, more than the mines, and brought in cheaper imports? But that would not have suited the government at the time.

But she decided to continue with her personal war against the miners, closing even profitable pits, leaving massive communities with unemployment at over 60%, and what did she do to help these communities.....NOTHING!!!

We are talking about lot more than the mining industry.....she was an evil woman who was obsessed with greed.

OK so theres a lot of recent history, hotly debated politic's here, so who would you vote for next time around, another lot of carrear politicians or abstain in disgust???
