Ideal Icos M3080 dismantling / opening instructions

what a load of s***te, have ya read pp's post on servicing isars in the cc
;)

I would love to see an isar/icos serviced with a vacuum cleaner

If you cant figure out where to remove screws to get into the boiler you have no hope of solving your poblem. If you m-series hasnt been serviced for a few years theres a good chance you could have issues with insulation boards.

Ring ideal/warmsure. It will need a thorough strip down.

Dont call British Gas!

They only do a safety check by measuring the flue gas composition.

Luckily none of your past plumbing achievements have included working on gas appliances.

Gas boilers are a lot more complicated now compared with old ones.

Thanks pp, will do.

But the magic words "insulation boards" in combination with icos managed to turn up this http://www.idealboilers.com/docs/pdf/icos_he_users_guide.pdf :)

That looks like it should help if I do decide to have a tinker ;)

Don't worry on reading through it I won't, so that has been a good exercise to find that doc. It's nice to know what is involved, I don't like just handing over cash blind, especially to tradesmen. I work on the general adage 'if you want a job doing properly do it yourself'. Unfortunately there are some instances where that is just not possible, either due to the need for specialist tools and equipment, or for safety/legal reasons - as is the case here.

I think the £80 service should do the trick assuming nothing needs replacing.

Thanks for your help.

I'll report back after it's been done.

I pity the poor soul who has to go to a 7 year old icos that has never been touched. Some how i dont think the 80 quid service will sort it.
If there is no evidence of the boiler being serviced on a yearly basis iam sure they can walk away(not 100% on this though)

heat exchanger is faulty. a hoover out wont fix your problem. expect a bill of around £500.

sorry to p!ss on your bon fire.

you never know he might touch lucky i went to a 2001 m series isar on friday the earth pins had not been changed but the insulation boards were spot on. It was on its 4th pcb though and origonal heat ex.

OP doesnt like handing over cash, especially to tradesmen, who are the exact people who are giving you free advice here.
Sorry you feel that way.
Get it serviced properly, pay the proper price (unlikely to be £80) some parts will possibly need replacing, then get the thing serviced once a year.

I appreciate your sentiments garfeild, I know there are exceptions to every rule - as is shown by the very helpful tradespeople on this forum, for whom I am grateful, believe me. Unfortunately there have been enough cases of dodgy boiler engineers appear on Rouge Traders to make the general public skeptical. Both in terms of lack of knowledge and foul practice, you can't deny that.

Well I've got an appointment booked - it's not as soon as I would have liked, I'm hoping for a cancellation, or no access spare slot to appear. I've turned the boiler stat down a half a notch to save it, and hope it holds out

Rogue Traders is an entertainment program.

They carefully select KNOWN dodgey firms and individuals and then set them up.

It would be no entertainment watching 49 engineers competently fixing the fault. The fun is watching the 50th who cannot find the problem.

Over the years the trend has changed. They are now mostly incompetent rather than just ripping the customer off. A few are non gas registered but thats easy for any householder to check.
