If Greece can do it, why can’t we or other EU countries?

What they should do is that anyone who comes here illegally is immediately put to work cleaning

At least they know where they are which is something we can’t say.

This is one of the Greek detention centres on the mainland. I think this is the oldest one which opened about twelve years ago. Now there are about thirty, I believe.

Keeping them in one place without the freedom to come and go until their claim is assessed.
What taxes would you raise to fund it

Building such places would take years, what do you do in the meantime.

It might not take as long as you think. In Greece they have used prefab accommodation units. It's not like building a high security prison.

Like the nightingale hospitals? They soon went up

I don't know exactly. But I think if a government really wanted to build them, they could do so pretty quickly. I read that in Greece the detention centres are in rural areas, away from public view. And the Greek ones seem to be pretty rudimentary, with portacabins for accommodation and wire fences. The government would probably have to override planning objections to get it done quickly.

At the moment, Reform's plan doesn't seem to lay out where asylum seekers would be accommodated. It looks like they mainly want to stop the boats in the Channel and return them to France. And then any who do arrive here, they intend to deport quickly, either to their home country or, if that isn't safe, a willing third country. That would involve ignoring international treaties etc. But whether any of this is practical or possible is not clear.

Tell 'em to bring their own tents and don't let anyone land on our shores without their own accommodation onboard. We'd just supply the caged enclosure, food, water and toilet blocks. That’s more than they'd be used to, coming from the camps in France.
