Some have a monthly fee some get you on the spread.
For my UK investments I use Interactive investor. For my US e*trade.
Interactive investor is ok. Monthly fees are a bit high. But on a 5k starter with regular deposits. Is probably irrelevant

there is nothing wrong with that strategy. Others will tell you its a stup1d idea as it will be eroded by inflation. But if you have more than you need, savings is fine.
For those who need a bit more than 3-5% some risk taking is needed.

Join H and L or similar for son and use his allowance to put up to 20k a year into an isa, linked to a share fund.
Set up a direct debit and job done.
