This is one of the few forums that I look in on where racism and immigration is not discussed.

Some go too far but at least they debate, on here the word black has only got to be used and you would think it's a recruitment drive for the KKK.

Best stick to cutting edge stuff like "ice lollies" but hang on, I can't remember ever seeing a lolly that is black, get the burning crosses out.

For what it's worth I agree, the mods are becoming trigger happy.
Methinks they should go on a refresher course particularly Mod no*.
Bring back the rockers.

IMOHO The mods behave like off duty traffic wardens waiting in the shadows for any minor infringement!!

My understanding of a forum is a place for public discussion!

If an individual does not feel comfortable with the content of the topic it should not prevent others from continuing the debate!!

The "Trolls" out there provide a breath of fresh air which livens the discussion!

95% of all posts have absolutely no content which enhances the debate!

What is the difference between a discussion and an argument as both parties invariably have differing points of view??

In any meaningful debate there has to be the capability to listen to all sides, respond to what is being posted by others and the potential for compromise otherwise the exercise is futile.

There are some on these forums (past and present) where this is not the case and I've come to the conclusion (aided by oilman) that the only moderation which will work for me is self moderation i.e. I will simply ignore posts from individuals where their sole aim is to provoke a pointless argument and not to debate.

If others do the same the topics won't get drawn into downward spirals where the mods simply lock them and these individuals may get tired of posting to themselves and get more involved.

Is that not just another description for an argument??

No. An argument is a HEATED exchange of conflicting views. However, debates can and often do, as witnessed on this forum, descend into meaningless arguments. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that some individuals go all out to achieve this end. Witness the six locked topics on this page alone. Read them and see whether you agree with me .

Softus you are confusing contradiction with argument.

You will probably post a statement contradicting this view.

No I'm not.

No I won't.

Oh no. I did, but I probably wouldn't have, therefore you were wrong. But I did, so you were probably right. But you can't be right because you're wrong, and...... <smoke comes from ears>

Well to avoid incurring the wrath of the mods I say we stick to mass debating.
