Off topic. Bring it here.

will it affect the sort of people who like to waste electrons by flooding the 'net with pictures of their dinner?
Nah, those are people with a sense of fun and enjoyment unlike some miserable ****s you get on here whose only enjoyment in life is putting up bad news stories about the UK.

Hey Mottie, this is one for you.
How come good mechanics go on to become mot testers?
This is the second good mechanic who leaves everyone in panic, including me, because they decided for a career change.
Now searching for another good one to do a clutch.

Because mot testers get paid good money and there is zero stress.

Mot testers last time I looked was something like 30k+ per year dependant on area.

Not a bad wage for an ageing mechanic who's mortgage is usually paid up

Easy money, not back breaking work. Getting fewer mot testers available these days because of the strict entry requirements to go on the course to become a tester. Most of the oldies that got a licence in the old days when anyone could be sent on a course by an mot centre have long retired. That plus annual assessment where many can't pass the test means they can’t get enough testers. I still take the assessment test each year even though I’ve not tested a car for several years now since the station was sold. If I wanted to start testing again, all I need to do is be observed by the ministry carrying out a test as your licence is put on hold if you don’t carry out at least one test every 6 months. It started off with a 50% pass mark and it is now 80% pass mark. I might even consider doing it on a peripatetic part-time basis to break up the boredom. Im even thinking about opening an motorcycle mot test station - there’s not many of those about and motorcycles are gaining in popularity especially inside the ULEZ zones due to old bangers being forced off the road.

What happens when combustion engines disappear.
These electric motors in EVs are apparently not as complex.

They’ll just be swapped out.
When I first started in the trade, we used to adjust points, plugs, timing, carb mixtures, valve clearances, wheel bearings, brakes etc. Also, most things were overhauled such as engines, gearboxes, fuel pumps, rear axles, starter motors, dynamo's etc. Cylinder heads had the faces skimmed, the valve seats recut, valve guides replaced. Worn engines would sometimes have a new set of piston rings fitted. On commercials we used to replace spring shackle bushes and pins, ream out and re-shim king pins, overhaul steering boxes, overhaul brake and master cylinders and we even used to fit new linings to brakes and clutches.
There’s not many technicians that could do that these days, everything is just replaced.

Not quite. It will still leave those who dress up in brightly coloured 'look at me' clothing and hats, strap a couple of planks on their feet and slide down hills with snow on them.
Have you been skiing? It's by far (as well as golf) the most lonely and humiliating thing you can do. There is nowt elegant or showy about my skiing. Even my ski pants are camouflage.

Brakes are still brakes.
Lights are still lights.
Suspension is still suspension.
Windscreens are still windscreens.
Structural integrity is still structural integrity.

In fact, apart from emissions, I cant immediately think of anything that doesnt equally apply to EVs. And I can think of extra things to inspect/test - cables & terminations, earthing of the charging system...

Have you been skiing?
A couple of times in the early eighties. Soll in Austria, Borovets in Bulgaria and foolishly Soll again in the late eighties with my wife, my mate, his wife and three kids under 3 between us. Disaster! 21°c in February, no snow, my son and wife got ill on day 2 so all seven of us got a taxi to Munich and flights home on day 3. Cost a bloody fortune. Never been since!

M-itch like all petrol heads are rueing the demise of piston driven cars. I find it a wee bit sad myself. But those hard core 'roid 'eds, with their peak caps facing backwards (never understood that one) are in total denial. Noisy, Halfords-ruined cars are the last great penis extension.
What about those big ole yank tanks over here on our little roads. What statement are they trying to
make eh ? Very weird, must be hundreds of them.

is it because

"The gambling and betting industry hosted the MPs at a time when the government is undertaking a comprehensive review of the Gambling Act to consider further restrictions on their advertising."

To nobody's surprise, Scott Benton, the Blackpool South MP, who is also a vice-chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on betting and gaming, was among eight Conservatives and two Labour members who accepted Euro 2020 tickets from gambling firms, according to the latest register of MPs' financial interests.

He received tickets from Entain Holdings to the England's semi-final match against Denmark, each valued at £3,457, and a £1,537.60 ticket to see the team's group match against the Czech Republic from the Gamesys Group.

Entain Holdings also provided him with tickets worth £1,100 to Wimbledon and he received hospitality worth £1,400 from the Betting and Gaming Council.
