Crap management as usual.
Don't employ people who can't do the job.

Common sense -
Tesco said it treated each case on its merits, but said it “made no sense” to employ staff on a till who refused to touch certain items for religious reasons.

I think if I'd queued to be served and was told to find another checkout I would be asking them to provide another operator or leaving the belt full and going elsewhere . funny that many local shops owned by followers of this kind of religion don't mind selling booze fags or porn.

Scanning it through a checkout isn't forbidden in their religion, major pistake happening here and it will only get sorted if enough customers complain. I certainly would.

I can understand "touching" if it were unwrapped meat, but packaged products -- how do they differ from any other glass bottle, plastic shrink wrap, whatever?

They want "us" to stop drinking and eating it, so this furthers their agenda by making it more difficult for shops to sell it. Obviously waited till enough muslims were in the job before coming out with this crap.

Not a problem for me, as they would not get the chance to handle my groceries anyway. And no, that's not a euphamism. ;)

Don't make this into a racial issue; it is entirely the management's fault for employing unsuitable staff or, of course, the media hyping as usual.
I know muslims aren't supposed to drink alcohol but is it official policy that they cannot touch bottles?

As one of the comments to the article said; if this happens to you, just walk out and leave your trolley-full there.
How long do you think it would continue?

No, you make a fuss first, loudly say it's a disgrace and give the muslim and the manager a hard time, THEN walk out leaving your trolley full there stating you feel insulted and angry.

And the management cannot legally turn someone down on the basis of them being muslim when applying for the job as it's religious discrimination.

Think MnS need to take advice from one of the muslim councils on the matter and get their staff told.

Marks and Sparks were originally set up by a Jewish Owner and has Jewish ties, so why is it even selling non kosher Alcohol or non Kosher foods.

Just leave your pork and booze til last, if they've scanned everything through they will soon get tired of people walking off when they refuse to finish scanning the rest. What next? Refusing to scan dog food because they don't eat it and consider dogs dirty?
