Rockets from Gazza have killed 17 Israelis in the last 7 years in retaliation the Israelis have killed hundreds maybe even thousands of Palestinians.
Obama says that the Israelis have the right to kill terrorists. but do they have to kill their families as well .

It's collective punishment on racial grounds.
Exactly the same as the Nazis lining up a hundred French, Italian Czech or Dutch citizens and shooting them for every German soldier killed by "the resistance" or "the terrorists" depending on your point of view. Because Germany lost the war, some of the responsible officers were later prosecuted and convicted of war crimes. Collective punishment is outlawed by the Geneva Conevention, but of course criminal acts are still committed by people who expect to get away with them.
The intention is presumably to create sufficient fear that the population will outlaw the local fighters.
Instead, as we know, every time you kill one person, you make a lifelong enemy of his father, brothers, sons, uncles, cousins, neighbours etc and so create many more enemies than you had before.

When you fire a rocket from a densely populated area, you can expect a rocket to come back to that same area, under the concept of reasonable self-defence. If your kids get killed by the retaliation, well, the lesson to be learned is to not fire rockets from back yards and streets....
Though, having said that, the Gaza strip is one big housing estate, anyway. Perhaps, therefore, the bigger lesson for Hamas is to not fire rockets from Gaza, at all.

the hatred is perpetual because the arguments (killings) over territory are never ending. as john d says "you kill my dad i kill your dad".
Arabs seem to have a territorial right yet both (Arabs and Jews) have a religious connection to the 'holy land'.

and the bigger lesson for all the other residents who live in a densely populated area, is that it's your hard luck, the Israelis will bomb you and kill your children? Even though you've never launched a rocket?
One dead Israeli citizen is worth how many hundred dead Palestinian citizens?
If you lob a brick through my window, is it reasonable self-defence for me to lob bricks through a hundred windows of other people who live in your town? Or just to shoot a few dozen random people off the street who share your nationality?
