Never mind self checkout tills .No checkouts at all

I saw something about that in the USA. I did think about posting it, but knew how it would be received.

Nothing wrong with Apple Pay etc. Not sure the requirement to have a smart phone to allow shopping is a good idea. Older people don’t have them.

@noseall do you have one old chap ?

"if picking up an age-restricted product, customers visit the “verify age” tab in the app and scan their face, which is then assessed by Yoti’s artificial intelligence (AI) – the customer’s photo is deleted, is not seen by a human at any point during the process"

Pretty sure the youngsters will work out a way to trick Yoti and get booze...

Whether we look on this sort of thing as progress or not, whether we agree with it or not, you won't stop it, bar perhaps smaller independent stores. I do the scan & go thing in Asda because I find it more convenient than queuing for a checkout assistant. I'm sure the bigger supermarkets have been talking about the next iteration of such technologies e.g. just putting the item in the trolley without having to scan it first. So in that sense a bit like this grab & go by Aldi.

Local aldi`s have put half dozen or so self checkouts . Large amount of people are refusing to use them and queuing at the open tills .Guess whats happening , they are putting staff onto the empty tills to serve them . So yep it can be stopped to an extent

Fair enough their prerogative. I prefer dealing/interacting with as few people as possible when out and about, so scan & go is a boon for me. Often I enter the scan & go area and there are people right beside it queuing at the traditional checkout. I'm usually heading for the exit and said queue hasn't even moved. No doubt exacerbated by having less people on the tills I grant you. It should be about balance e.g. I'd be p1ssed off if my local Asda did away with scan & go just to appease those who prefer the traditional checkout, in a sense forcing folk like me to queue and deal with a checkout assistant who often fires your goods down the checkout at 100mph. By the same token, I do agree in larger stores at least some traditional checkouts should be retained.

Nothing will stop it. It will be a gradual process in the same way those that say voted for Brexit or those that insist on using tills, will gradually die out. 50 years time, people will laugh about manned tills/checkouts.

i can see no one would want to take you out socialising
My eldest is up from Worcester Uni, so that he can team up with his bruv and they are taking their old man out. Youngest will be away for Fathers Day.
Funny, but all the young guns I go skiing with, insist the old boy goes too. Must be a 'take someone sensible' thing. (y)
